Now, here’s a surprise… The next DC Studios and Warner Bros. Picture Animation movie will be Dynamic Duo. And it will feature not one Robin, but two: Jason Todd, and Dick Grayson.
DC Studios head James Gunn announced the news on social media, revealing the film’s logo, along with the perhaps even more shocking news that it won’t just be mixing Robins. The movie will also be a combination of traditional animation, CGI, and puppetry.
Said Gunn on Threads, “Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, DYNAMIC DUO, the story of Robin… or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. The first feature film from the visionary Swaybox, a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI, a script from the wonderfully talented Matt Aldrich, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho. This is something special.”
Swaybox Studios has been around since 2014 and specializes in puppetry. As Gunn notes, they’re neophytes when it comes to feature film animation… But Matt Aldrich is not. He’s credited with the screenplay for Coco, as well as Lightyear, the spinoff of the Toy Story series. And he’s also working on the screenplay for Greta Gerwig’s as-yet-untitled Chronicles of Narnia film from Netflix.
Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho you probably know from The Batman, as well as the currently running The Penguin, and Batman: Caped Crusader. It’s intriguing to see Reeves become to steward for all things Batman for DC Studios. And if rumors hold true, there may be a Clayface movie from Mike Flanagan from them, and a Mr. Freeze movie as well.
