The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2 premiere has a lot of big plot moves as we slowly bring Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) back together. But you know what the episode also had? A lot of random explosions.
Spoilers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2, Episode 1 “The Book of Carol: La gentillesse des étrangers” past this point.
More specifically, it had two wildly random explosions, so let’s break them both down. The first happens when Daryl goes rogue in France — because of course he does — trying to take down Marion Genet’s (Anne Charrier) Pouvoir des Vivants group for good. After his group stops a prisoner transport, Daryl goes HAM shooting up the place, and ultimately confronting Genet. She smiles wildly at him, he points a gun at her. And just as Daryl is about to take down the fascistic leader… Boom. Something explodes behind him, and she escapes.
Why does whatever that is blow up behind him? I’m honestly not sure. And perhaps I missed something but it also looks like the explosion is caused by some sort of explosive device that the crew of the TV show placed behind Reedus. Is that a… Wall blowing up? A person? Unclear.
The implication is that Genet’s master plan was to blow up whatever that was so she had time to sneak off. But how she did that, or what is even happening, I have no idea. It looks pretty cool, though, so that’s nice.
Over to Carol, who has managed to convince Ash (Manish Dayal) to take her to France by lying about her daughter Sophia and husband Ed being there (they are both long dead). Ash owns a plane, and as he reveals to Carol he’s been stockpiling fuel for a good, long time. However, the complex Ash has been living in has an issue… Every once in a while the power fails, opening the gate and letting walkers in. That happens just as they’re getting ready to leave for France. And then lightning hits the fuel shed, blowing it up.
Another random explosion! Why did lightning hit the fuel shed now, and not at any other time in the years Ash has been living there? Because the lightning knew Carol and Ash needed to be low on fuel for the plot to work? Again, it looks very cool, but watching the second entirely random explosion in under an hour made me, a viewer of the series who was otherwise enjoying the episode, laugh out loud.
I guess this is parallel structure? Both Carol and Daryl experience random explosions, showing the tight bond between the two of them? Perhaps it’s the hand of god, working through boy savior Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi). Or maybe, per the nomenclature: they’re random explosions.
