Jeff Lemire’s Fishflies is one of the most haunting, beautiful books the writer/artist has done in years. And now Image Comics will collect all seven issues in a hardcover trade collection next year.
“Fishflies was a true labour of love. In many ways it was a return to the terrain of Essex County, but with a supernatural twist,” said Lemire via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “It’s the story of a small town crime, a lonely girl and a monster, but it’s a lot more than that to me. Fishflies got me through some really hard times and Franny and Bug became my anchors and companions. The story took me places I never anticipated, and I’m really happy to be collecting it all into one complete graphic novel edition.”
It’s also about a man who shoots a kid in a convenience store and then turns into a giant bug monster. He befriends a snotty-nosed girl, and as they try to stay one step ahead of the law, we discover more about how this “curse” has plagued the small town of Belle River, Ontario, for decades.
If you’re a fan of movies like The Iron Giant — and why wouldn’t you be — think of that, but made by the Coen Brothers and produced by David Cronenberg and you have the general idea.
Fishflies, the hardcover collection, will be in comic book shops on March 5, 2025, and bookstores on March 18, 2025.
