In ThunderCats #8, fans of the Dynamite series got to meet the mysterious Apex. And now, the mystery deepens with ThunderCats Apex Special, a one-shot special written by Ed Brisson with art by Rapha Lobosco.

“I was a big ThunderCats fan as a kid,” said Brisson via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “Like so many of my generation, I was a latchkey kid and would come home after school and settle in for cartoons, of which ThunderCats was a favorite. I had the toys, I collected the comics, I loved them. I’m hoping that we can do justice to the original series, while also surprising readers with our approach in this one.”

Brisson describes the issue as “Unforgiven meets Mad Max,” with Apex wandering around the badlands, targeted by bandits. But when Apex enters a “dusty saloon” it’s clear he’s on a mission. But who is Apex after? And why?

“Apex is new to the reader, but he’s been planning and plotting behind the scenes for a LONG time,” added editor Nate Cosby. “He’s here to stay. He showed up first in ThunderCats #8, and in the ThunderCats Apex Special, Ed and Rapha show who he is, what he wants, and how that’ll affect the TCats for years to come…”

Dynamite further teases that this special sets up big things for the next story arc of the main title, beginning in ThunderCats #11. Check out covers by Declan Shalvey, Lucio Parrillo, Meghan Hetrick, and Jae Lee, below.
