Here’s some news that’s ICE to hear… A Mr. Freeze movie may be in development for DC Studios. And not only that but involved in some way is Matt Reeves, the man behind The Batman and The Penguin. So if this is accurate, is the Mr. Freeze movie spinning out of The Batman? Or is it something else?
The news comes via the latest issue of Production Weekly, which has been on a tear lately revealing big info — particularly on the Marvel Studios side of the fence. However, our regular caveat here that PW is open about not vetting their listings. They’re available for people in production to search for jobs but can be based on rumors or other vaporware-type projects.
That said, here’s what is in the listing for the potential film. They title it Mister Freeze, which, full disclosure, threw me when I was reading through this week’s issue as the character is spelled Mr. Freeze. But it is, indeed, coming from 6th & Idaho, Matt Reeves’s production company. It has Matt Reeves, James Gunn, and Peter Safran listed as producers, as well as DC Studios, DC Entertainment, The Safran Company, and Warner Bros. Television.
…And that’s pretty much it, other than clarifying it is indeed in development as a feature film, and not a TV series. However, it also raises one, very pertinent question: is this in development for the DCU, The Batman Epic Crime Saga (aka Matt Reeves’s universe), or something else? Last week, we discovered that Mike Flanagan’s long-rumored Clayface movie was potentially back on the table, as well. So that something else could very well be unconnected Gotham City villain movies, a la Joker, and its upcoming sequel.
Just because Reeves is attached doesn’t mean it’s definitely connected to the Robert Pattinson starring The Batman. Reeves also co-produced and helped create Batman: Caped Crusader, the animated series on Prime Video. So he’s become sort of a Batman impresario.
Regardless, as this is in development, nothing could come of it regardless. I hope they don’t put the project on ice, though. It would be so cool to see it in theaters, preferably in the Winter. But you know what they say: there’s no business like snow business.
