This is Comic Book Club News for September 24, 2024.

The 2024 Ringo Awards Winners Have Been Announced:

Each year at Baltimore Comic Con, the Ringo Awards are announced, named after departed comic book artist Mike Wieringo. Like the Eisners, these awards represent the best of the best in the comic book industry and are voted on by professionals, overseen by an advisory committee.

Per The Beat, Jeff Smith, creator of Bone was one of the big winners with two awards, for Best Cartoonist and Best Humor Comic. Mariko Tamaki won Best Writer, beating out the likes of Ed Brubaker and Tom King. Elsa Charretier won Best Artist or Penciller/Inker Team for Love Everlasting, while Stan Sakai took home Best Letterer for Usagi Yojimbo. And Chris Samnee nabbed Best Cover Artist in a tough category against Tula Lotay, Bill Sienkiewicz, Fiona Staples, and others.

Best Original Graphic Novel wasn’t a huge surprise: Monica, by Daniel Clowes, which has been universally lauded. However, Best Series was a surprise, going to Geiger: Ground Zero by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis, while Best Single Issue or Story went to Animal Pound #1.

Congrats to all the winners!

New Marvel What If Series Finds Galactus Choosing Other Heralds:

What if Galactus chose other heralds? And they were all superheroes? That’s the idea behind Marvel’s new title, What If…? Galactus, which finds Galactus transforming five heroes, from five different writer and artist teams.

Running weekly in January, the miniseries kicks off with The Hulk by Mat Groom and Lan Medina, which finds Hulk as a herald, and Bruce Banner as a potential adversary. Then Josh Trujillo and Manuel Garcia take on Gambit, who himself is taking on a multiversal heist. Alex Segura, Scot Eaton, and Cam Smith tackle Moon Knight, who causes some issues with the power cosmic thanks to his alternate personalities.

The next week, the legend herself Ann Nocenti teams up with Stephen Byrne to turn Rogue into a herald. And Kalinda Vasquez and Daniel Picciotto wrap things up with Spider-Gwen.

Each issue has its own number one, and it all starts hitting stores on January 1, 2025.

Image Comics Launches New Horror Imprint, Ninth Circle:

Horror is all the rage in comics right now, and it isn’t stopping any time soon. Image Comics has announced Ninth Circle, a new imprint from a bevy of comic book superstars.

Those include Garth Ennis, Marguerite Bennett, Joe Pruett, Ram V, Adam Glass, and more. In fact, Ennis will be anchoring the launch title for the imprint, Freddie The Fix, about a man who cleans up the messes left behind by werewolves, zombies, vampires, and other creatures of the night. the book will include art by Mike Perkins, and hit stores on December 11.

Said Glass via press release, “Ninth Circle is all about embracing the horror genre in all its forms. With Garth’s unparalleled ability to craft unforgettable worlds; Ram, Marguerite and Joe’s daring eye for pushing the boundaries of the medium; and my own experience in storytelling across multiple mediums, we can’t wait to share these stories with fans.”

Further titles TBA include one by Bennett with Jill Thompson, Pruett working with Butch Guice, and Glass with Bernard Chang. The imprint promises quality over quantity, with each issue including a standalone tale each month.
