It’s time for another round of potential production updates, this time for everything coming up in James Gunn’s DCU. while some things are closer to fruition, like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, others are potentially purely speculative, like The Authority movie. So let’s get into it.
All this info comes from this week’s issue of Production Weekly, which serves as a resource for behind-the-scenes folks about productions in progress, so they can reach out for jobs. However, they openly don’t vet the info – so while some things are spot on, others are rumory, at best.
That out of the way, let’s talk The Authority. A number of characters from the DC Comics book are appearing in the upcoming Superman. So it makes a sort of sense to spin them off in some way, to keep those actors around and involved. They also may be in a very different place emotionally (and physically) by the time Superman is over. PW earmarks the superpowered team as getting started in some way in the UK in 2025, with Matthew Vaughn potentially “mentioned to direct.”
Next up is Clayface, from writer and director Mike Flanagan. If a movie focusing on the malleable Batman villain is in the works, PW notes it could be in 2025. It would also be, most likely, in Matt Reeves’s The Batman universe, versus James Gunn’s DCU. Back in 2023, when this rumor first cropped up, Flanagan somewhat shut it down, writing, “Re: CLAYFACE – the news today is entirely speculative. When or if something like that ever becomes real, I promise I’ll tell you guys.” Still, that was over a year ago now, so perhaps things have changed.
Then there’s Lanterns, the Green Lantern HBO series that seems to be a priority for DC Studios right now. Which makes sense, it’s a cornerstone of the story Gunn and company are telling. Josh Brolin was rumored to be offered the role of Hal Jordan but seems to have declined. PW also notes that beyond showrunner Chris Mundy, and writers Damon Lindelof and Tom King, Justin Britt-Gibson, Breannah Gibson, and Vanessa Baden Kelly are on the writing staff for the series. They also say “Offers are out to
Matthew McConaughey and Ewan McGregor for the role of Hal Jordan,” though I believe at least the McConaughey rumor was shut down. More intriguingly, they add that, “Kelvin Harrison Jr. mentioned for John Stewart.” Additionally, “Lucy Tcherniak and Stephen Williams mentioned to direct.” And finally, they have it earmarked to film from January to June of 2025, which is rapidly approaching.
And as for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, there’s nothing new here except two rumors: “Matthias Schoenaerts mentioned for the role of Krem of the Yellow Hills;” and “Jason Momoa mentioned for a role.” Both make sense, as the former actor is a good fit for the villain of the film and if Momoa ends up playing Lobo as frequently fancast then having him show up in a space-based movie fits. But again, take these very much with a grain of salt. Currently, PW has that as shooting in the UK from January 2025 to May 2025.
So there you go! Whether any of this is accurate, we’ll have to wait and see.
