‘Agatha All Along’ Doubles Down On The Scarlet Witch Being 100% Dead… Unless…

Wanda and Agatha in WandaVision

Wanda Maximoff, aka The Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen in the MCU, is dead. That was certainly what we were told at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And it’s a fact that’s emphasized over and over again in the two-episode premiere of Disney+’s Agatha All Along. But at the same time, the premiere offers a pretty clear way she may come back.

Spoilers for Agatha All Along past this point.

To briefly recap what got us to this point, at the end of WandaVision, Wanda set off to find her sons, Billy and Tommy, somewhere in the multiverse. Then in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we discovered just how far she would go to do that. Wanda was ultimately corrupted by the mystical tome the Darkhold in the process. Realizing her error, she used her powered-up magic to destroy every copy of the Darkhold in existence… And was flattened by Wundagore Mountain crashing down on her. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) even clears things up when asked if Wanda made it, shaking his head, “No.”

Just in case that wasn’t all clear, in Agatha All Along Episode 1, “Seekest Thou The Road,” we open with Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) trapped in the TV parody spell Wanda left her in, in the WandaVision finale. She thinks she’s on a Mare of Easttown parody titled Agnes of Westview, “based on the Danish TV show WandaVision.” The residents of Westview are all cast members, from her cop partner to the town’s chief of police to a shady pawnbroker.

But more specifically, we open on “Agnes” investigating a dead body in the woods: the body of the Scarlet Witch. Agnes doesn’t know who she is, and we never see her face — presumably because Elizabeth Olsen wasn’t available for the episode. But all the facts match up with Multiverse of Madness. The body dropped out of nowhere. It seems to have been flattened by a rock. The body is wearing the same outfit Wanda wore at one point in the movie, along with her fingers blackened by the corruption of the Darkhold. She’s described as “Late 20s, green eyes, 5’7”,” with “hair the color of scarlet.”

There’s no mistaking that the body is Wanda, and though that body is not actually there in reality — we discover that Agatha is trapped in the spell alone, and has been wandering around Westview for three years babbling TV nonsense to the residents — it’s definitely the spell telling Agatha the Scarlet Witch is no longer among the living. In one breaking the fourth wall moment, Agatha’s partner even says, “Oh she’s really most sincerely dead,” in reference to the body.

So yeah, Wanda is 100% dead after the events of Multiverse of Madness, and Agatha All Along doubles down on that, in case you missed it.

…But the show also offers a clear way to bring her back, in the second episode.

Here’s How Agatha All Along Might Bring Back The Scarlet Witch

While we meet Joe Locke’s character, named Teen, in the season’s first episode, it isn’t really until Episode 2 “Circle Sewn with Fate Unlock Thy Hidden Gate,” that we get to know what he’s up to. Specifically, he wants to walk the Witches’ Road with Agatha, a mystical trial that will grant whoever successfully completes it a gift at the end. Or as Teen puts it, “It will give you the thing you want the most.”

Both Teen and Agatha say they want power. The latter because Wanda took her magic. The former is because he has only studied magic, and witches, but doesn’t have “real power.” But come on, that’s not how these things work. Sure they say they want power, but is it actually the thing they want the most?

Specifically when it comes to Teen, there’s a whole mystery around the character. When he tries to tell Agatha his name, a Sigil appears over his mouth, blocking the words. And when he attempts to tell her about his family life while driving in a car, his volume fades out. Perhaps lip readers online will be able to figure out what he’s saying, but Agatha sure can’t. While we do get to hear Teen mention his supportive parents, and he has a boyfriend who calls him (only to be ignored), there’s something more going on there.

Smart money says that Teen is actually Billy Maximoff, the son of Scarlet Witch, all grown up. So wouldn’t it stand to reason that the thing he wants the most, and may be granted at the end of the Witches’ Road, is his mother? Wouldn’t her son completing a mystical trial be the perfect way to bring back Wanda?

Particularly with Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer rumored to be writing a Scarlet Witch movie for Marvel, it stands to reason that bringing Wanda back for the finale to tie things up with Teen — if he is indeed Billy Maximoff — and perhaps settling beef with Agatha, as well, would be a logical setup for a potential feature film.

Sure this may be wishing and hoping and dreaming. And there’s an argument to be made that having Olsen appear as Wanda on Agatha All Along might distract from it being, you know, Agatha all along. But with the body showing up in the premiere, it would give the season a nice circular structure to bring her back in the finale. And now, with the events of the first two episodes, there’s a clear path to making that happen.
