Karl Moline, Co-Creator Of ‘Fray,’ Dead At 51

Karl Moline

Karl Moline, best known as the co-creator of Fray with Joss Whedon, the Vampire Slayer of the future, has died at age 51.

Moline first came to prominence in 2001 after signing an exclusive with CrossGen and creating the horror series Route 666. At the same time, he co-created Fray with Whedon for Dark Horse, which ran eight issues. The series was a hit, tying into the currently running Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 7 — though it was left open for more, with fans asking about the series for years hence.

Moline later moved over to Marvel, working with future EIC, C.B. Cebulski, on The Loners, among other projects. But he once again returned to working with Whedon on Fray, this time teaming up the character with Buffy for Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight in 2008.

Moline continued to work on various properties including Supergirl for DC Comics, Unity for Valiant, and once again Buffy for Dark Horse.

However, in the past few years, Moline has suffered from health issues. In 2015 he received a pancreas and kidney transplant, aided financially by the Hero Initiative. And in 2019, he spoke out about further health issues, once again aided by the Hero Initiative. Though no cause of death was reported at this time, Moline passed away earlier this month, as reported by CBR.

Our thoughts are with his family.
