Magik gets a solo series.
This is Comic Book Club News for September 13, 2024.
Marvel Announces Hellhunters, A New Miniseries From Phillip Kennedy Johnson:
Phillip Kennedy Johnson introduced a World War II version of Ghost Rider in the pages of Incredible Hulk. And now that character is spinning out into his own hellacious miniseries with Hellhunters.
Written by Johnson with art by Adam Gorham, the five-issue miniseries will take place back in 1944 and find this Ghost Rider teaming up with Wolverine, Nick Fury, Peggy Carter, Bucky Barnes, and Soldier Supreme.
Said Kennedy Johnson via press release: “I had a fully-realized origin story for Sergeant Sal Romero in my head before my partner Nic Klein brought him to life with his art, and the character turned out so unbelievably cool and fun, we knew the ‘War Devil’ arc wouldn’t be his last appearance. NOW, with fan response being as overwhelming as it has, superstar artist Adam Gorham and I are giving Marvel fans the ORIGIN of Ghost Rider ’44. The forgotten story of the toughest, bloodiest, scariest, most bad-a** squad of Nazi-killers to come out of WWII: the HELLHUNTERS.”
Hellhunters #1 blazes its way into stores on December 15.
The Thing Variant Covers Coming In November:
The Thing — the Fantastic Four character, not the monster from the John Carpenter movie — is taking over Marvel’s covers this November.
Per the publisher, the rocky hero will be transformed into various other heroes across 12 covers, including Phoenix, Captain America, Spider-Boy, Wolverine, Dazzler, and more. It all looks very weird, I’ll tell you what. But Marvel also plugs they’re rolling these out before a “major new saga” comes to the pages of Ryan North and Iban Coello’s Fantastic Four next year. As well as, of course, the MCU’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
What better way to celebrate than with a nightmarish Wolverine Thing? The variants start rolling out first Wednesday in November, and continue through mid-December.
Magik Gets A Solo Series From Marvel:
Making it a mighty Marvel hat trick, Magik is getting her own solo series from Marvel Comics.
Written by Ashley Allen with art by Germán Peralta, the series will find Illyana Rasputin dealing with something mysterious and deadly in the Alaskan ice, as well as coming to terms with her Darkchylde personality.
Said Allen, “I’m beyond excited to be returning to write Illyana! Supernatural stories featuring characters with hearts of gold are my favorite, so this series has been a dream to write! I can’t wait for readers to experience the adventure we take Magik on to slay some demons … and maybe accept some of her own.”
This marks the first-ever ongoing solo series for the character and will debut on January 8, 2025.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And hey maybe what’s in the Alaskan ice is The Thing? The John Carpenter one this time.
