15 years ago, writer Jordan Hart released Ripple Effects, a graphic novel that presented a superhero with type 1 diabetes. Now, the comic is back with a Deluxe Hardcover on Kickstarter, and Comic Book Club has an exclusive look inside.
“I knew that Ripple Effects would only resonate with readers if the story and world were relatable,” Hart said via a statement provided to Comic Book Club. “That’s why it’s set in present-day Long Beach. Sure, we may not have superhumans flying in the sky or bouncing bullets off their chest, but that’s the only difference between our worlds. And while some of the characters have special powers, they struggle with the same things we all do: guilt, righting wrongs, chasing your dreams, economic inequality, and the basic desire to help others during trying times.”
The new edition is presented by the GLAAD Media Award-winning publisher Fanbase Press in its first-ever Kickstarter campaign. Alongside Hart, who also colored the book, it’s illustrated by Bruno Chiroleu, flatted by Shane Kadlecik, lettered by Oceano Ransford, and features a cover by Justin C. Harder and a forward by Matthew Noe. In addition, the Deluxe Edition features a new forward by Gail Simone. It also features study guides by Tim Smyth, and comics literacy advocate Creators, Assemble!
The Deluxe Edition also pairs, per a press release provided to Comic Book Club, “youth artists who have invisible disabilities and illnesses ranging from deafness to Autism Spectrum Disorder with superstar artists.” Those artists include Liana Kangas, Ray-Anthony Height, Don Aguillo, and Manual Martinez. In addition, there are “Unseen Ripples” essays by “individuals with invisible disabilities and illnesses who relate Ripple Effects‘ events to their own lived experience, ranging in topic from paranoid schizophrenia to diabetes.”
