Artist John Cassaday Has Died At Age 52:

Artist John Cassaday has shockingly, suddenly passed away at age 52. We reported the news on the Comic Book Club website as it happened, but it felt remiss not to mention his passing here on the podcast.

After hospitalization for an unknown illness on September 3, Cassaday passed away at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City on September 9. The news was reported by his sister Robin on Facebook.

Cassaday was best known for his hyper-realized, widescreen art style, and two comics in particular: Planetary for Wildstorm at DC Comics; and Astonishing X-Men at Marvel Comics. Both ran for twenty-ish issues over multiple years but had an outsized impact on the comic book industry as a whole. He also helped relaunch Star Wars for Marvel Comics and wrote and drew some fantastic stories for Hellboy, among other comic book work.

Cassaday is survived by his sister, mother, and partner. Our thoughts are with them.

DC Unveils Batman Day Plans:

Are you ready for Batman Day? Well, get ready! September 21, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Comics are celebrating the debut of Detective Comics #27, the holiday also known as Batman Day.

There are plenty of ways to celebrate, from Bat-signals being set up worldwide, to the debut of The Penguin on Max. However, this is a comic book podcast, so let’s talk about that. DC is releasing Joker: The World, an international collection of stories about the crown prince of crime. In addition, there will be a deluxe edition of Batman: The Long Halloween, and the debut of Batman: The Long Halloween: The Last Halloween, Jeph Loeb’s tribute to Tim Sale. And Batman/Elmer Fudd will be getting a new printing, along with a Noir edition.

Over on DC Universe Infinite, there will be a number of free Batman comics to read in front of the paywall. If you are interested in subscribing, there’s also a 30-day free trial for new subscribers using the code BATMAN8530DAY.

And there’s one other way you can celebrate Batman Day: by swearing vengeance on the criminals infesting this city. Good luck!

Skybound Celebrates G.I. Joe #1 With Movie Screening:

Skybound is transforming and rolling out for the release of G.I. Joe #1, and yes, I may have mixed my franchises up.

On November 13, the day the comic drops, writer Joshua Williamson will sign the book at Things from Another World at Universal CityWalk Hollywood, in an event open to the public. And then immediately after, members of the Skybound Insiders program can attend a screening of 1987’s G.I. Joe: The Movie at the nearby Universal Cinema AMC, followed by a Q&A with Williamson and prizes for the crowd.

It’s enough to get you to say, “I love being a Turtle!” Did I mix them up again? I did? Well, now I know.
