Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the long-in-the-works animated series coming to Disney+, finally has an update. Sort of. Marvel Comics will be releasing a five-issue limited series that will introduce the world of the show, starting this December.
Written by Christos Gage with art by Eric Gapstur, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will introduce the series’s version of Peter Parker, his supporting cast, and some of the villains. It will also include “some of the amazing adventures to come in this highly anticipated animated series that takes place during Peter’s earliest days as Spider-Man,” per a press release from Marvel provided to Comic Book Club.
“I’ve had the privilege of writing a lot of Spider-Man’s adventures, both in comics and in the Insomniac video games, but one thing I’ve never gotten the chance to do is recount his earliest exploits,” Gage said. “And the exciting part about this book is it’s a brand new take on those formative times. While this is definitely Peter Parker, the Spidey we know and love, he’s got a new cast of supporting characters – including Nico Minoru, who you may know from Runaways – and some surprising twists!”
Not only that, but Spider-Man is getting a wildly different costume… Which you can glimpse in the covers for issue one below. Of note, perhaps, the first issue will hit on December 11, and Marvel teases that this prequel comic will hit “before it does” — “it” being the animated series. So while rumors set the release date as November 2, it’s possible we may not get Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man until at least the first issue of this comic book is out.
On the other hand, the X-Men ’97 prequel comic came out after that series streamed on Disney+, so who knows? I do not know.
Here’s the official synopsis for the series, as well as Leonardo Romero’s main cover, and an animation variant cover, below.
In Marvel Animation’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Peter Parker is on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike what we’ve seen before and a style that celebrates the character’s earliest comic book roots. In this new comic book series, you can take the very first steps along with him as he discovers his powers, decides to become a hero, and even picks out his name and costume! Now Peter’s gotta survive an entire Freshman year as a newbie crime-fighting vigilante…and if you think you know how this story goes, you are in for a surprise!
