New Hellboy miniseries coming from Dark Horse Comics

Pantheon to publish Tongues!

Happy birthday, Alison Bechdel.

This is Comic Book Club News for September 10, 2024.

Chris Roberson And Michael Avon Oeming Teaming Up For New Hellboy Miniseries:

Chris Roberson and Michael Avon Oeming are teaming up for a new Hellboy miniseries from Dark Horse Comics. Titled The Shadow of the Golden Crane, the four-issue miniseries will focus on the connection between B.P.R.D. agent Susan Xiang and the mysterious Golden Crane Society.

Said Roberson via AIPT, “As far back as Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1953 we have teased the idea that there is some connection between Susan Xiang, an agent of the B.P.R.D. with psychic abilities, and an organization called the Golden Crane Society, a secret society that protected the people of China from otherworldly threats for centuries… In each issue Susan relives the experiences of a different group of Golden Crane members at different points in history in a variety of locations in China and beyond, so that each chapter is essentially a standalone story that makes up one part of a larger narrative. And in the end, Susan discovers that she and her family might be more closely connected to the legacy of the Golden Crane than she ever imagined.”

The new series also includes characters Hellboy and Victor Koestler and will hit stores on January 15, 2025.

Pantheon To Publish Anders Nilsen Graphic Novel Tongues:

Tongues, a new graphic novel duology by Anders Nilsen, is scheduled for publication by Pantheon. What does that mean? Let’s find out together!

Per ICv2, the book is “a modern retelling of the story of Prometheus… set in the oil-rich lands of modern-day Central Asia, with the eagle telling the story of Prometheus’ ordeal and his quest for revenge on the god that punished him.” The two-volume series also focuses on an East African orphan and a young man with a teddy bear on his back.

I still sort of don’t know what all that means, but it sounds intriguing. And Nilsen is an award-winning creator with the Lyn Ward Graphic Novel Prize, a Xeric Award, three Ignatzes, and an Eisner nomination under his belt. Not literally.

Tongues wags its way into stores on March 11, 2025.

Alison Bechdel Turns 64 Today:

Today is Alison Bechdel’s birthday! The lauded creator of Dykes to Watch Out For and Fun Home turns 64 today.

While Bechdel has been working as a comic creator for 41 years, she’s probably still best known for one, singular strip published as part of Dykes to Watch Out For, which introduced what would come to be popularly known as The Bechdel Test. Introduced in 1985, the comic had the main characters of the strip discussing criteria to see a movie: The movie has to have at least two women in it, who talk to each other, about something other than a man.

While Bechdel meant the strip as a joke, it’s taken on a life of its own, being used as a semi-legit test for movies and TV shows, and even finding aspects of the test incorporated into screenwriting software.

However, Bechdel would probably better like you to celebrate her birthday by reading Fun Home, listening to the Fun Home musical soundtrack, or checking out The Secret to Superhuman Strength, her most recent graphic novel. But hey, I’m just one man on a podcast talking to nobody about something other than a man, so what do I know?

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And this podcast definitely doesn’t pass the Bechdel Test.
