Rumor: Josh Brolin Offered Role Of Hal Jordan In DCU ‘Lanterns’

Josh Brolin Hal Jordan Green Lantern

Josh Brolin might be rollin’ into yet another comic book-based role. Per reports from several outlets, Brolin has been offered the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming HBO and DCU series Lanterns, based on the Green Lantern comic books.

The rumor was initially broken by Nexus Point News, then backed up by The Insneider, though as of this writing hasn’t been reported by the trades, nor has it been laughed down by James Gunn’s Threads account. What a world we live in! Imagine this paragraph making any sense to anyone! Anyway.

Brolin has made a career — literally — out of comic book roles. He famously played Thanos in multiple Avengers movies, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, and vocally on What If…?. Over at Fox, he played Cable in Deadpool 2… Which given the events of Deadpool & Wolverine is now another MCU character. And previously for DC, he played the role of Jonah Hex in, you guessed it, Jonah Hex. If he does indeed snag the role of Hal Jordan, including his role as Young Agent K in Men in Black 3 and in the remake of Oldboy (which was based on a Manga), he has officially assembled the Infinity Stones of comic book-based roles.

Lanterns teams up the more roguish Hal Jordan with the straight-laced John Stewart to investigate a dark, Midwest mystery that Gunn has stated is key to the overall plot of his 10-year plan for the DCU. The series is showrun by Chris Mundy, who is co-writing it with Tom King and Damon Lindelof. It’s already been given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order by HBO. Though other than Brolin’s potential casting, not much else is known at this time.

Lanterns is one of the many projects in the works for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. The first out of the gate is the animated Creature Commandos, coming in December. Then next July is the big one, Superman, written and directed by James Gunn himself. Other projects coming up include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which has cast House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock in the title role.
