‘Twas the month before DC All In, and all through DC Comics, not a creature was stirring except for the Bat. And Superman, and Wonder Woman… Look, there are a lot of great comics coming from DC Comics in September 2024, okay? Okay.
That includes horror fare like Plastic Man No More and Nice House by the Sea. It also includes a lot of Absolute Power, as the event rockets toward its end. And most importantly? It’s Batman’s birthday, so don’t forget to get him some pearls or something.
Read on for our picks for the 13 best DC Comics coming out in September 2024.
1. Absolute Power #3
Release Date: September 4, 2024
Absolute Power has been a barnburner of an event so far, with the action and tension ramping up every issue. This time around, the heroes retreat to Themyscria to make their last stand against Amanda Waller. Be sure to also check out the Absolute Power: Origins and Absolute Power: Task Force VII miniseries this month, as well, because they’ve been great, too. And on September 18, DC releases Absolute Power: Super Son #1, which focuses in on Jon Kent, and looks to be an emotionally draining epic.
2. Poison Ivy #25
Release Date: September 4, 2024
One of the best books on the stands celebrates its 25th issue with an oversized entry written by G. Willow Wilson featuring an array of awesome artists.
3. The Boy Wonder #5
Release Date: September 4, 2024
This fantastic Black Label series comes to a close, teaming up all of the other Robins with Damian Wayne to fight Ra’s al Ghul. Juni Ba’s art is great, the story delves deeply into what makes all of the Robins — particularly Damian — tick… Don’t miss this.
4. The Penguin #12
Release Date: September 4, 2024
Tom King and Rafael de Latorre’s crime saga belatedly ends with this issue, though times out nicely to the week before The Penguin premieres on HBO. Weird how that worked out!
5. Plastic Man No More #1
Release Date: September 4, 2024
Hey, kids! Wanna see Plastic Man die? That’s what happens (maybe) in this Black Label series, which finds that titular elastic scamp melting slowly while trying to reconnect with his criminal son.
6. Trinity Special: World’s Finest #1
Release Date: September 4, 2024
If you missed the superb back-up stories in Wonder Woman by Tom King and Belén Ortega, here’s a second collection of ’em. In this one, Jon Kent and Damian Wayne get turned into corgis. What’s not to love?
7. Outsiders #11
Release Date: September 11, 2024
This wild (storm) series comes to a close with the end of the DC Universe. It’s been twisty and unpredictable so far, and I, for one, am curious to see how it all shakes out.
8. Multiversus: Collision Detected #1
Release Date: September 18, 2024
The new comic, based on the video game, based on the comic, smashes together a bunch of Warner Bros. characters into one story. Will it work? You’ll just have to read to find out, but I’m just hoping Tom eats Batman.
9. Batman Day 2024: Batman / Elmer Fudd Special #1
Release Date: September 18, 2024
Speaking of mash-ups, this classic is a must-read if you missed it the first time around, a surprisingly emotionally charged story of Elmer Fudd and Batman that must be seen to be believed. If you have read it before, DC is also releasing a Noir edition on the same day.
10. Detective Comics #1089
Release Date: September 25, 2024
Ram V’s long, operatic run on Detective Comics comes to an end with this issue.
11. Justice Society of America #12
Release Date: September 25, 2024
Geoff Johns’s run comes to an end this month as well, opening up to Jeff Lemire’s All In run debuting in November. While this title has taken a long time to come out, it’s been solid — it’ll be interesting to see how Johns wraps it all up.
12. Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween #1
Release Date: September 25, 2024
The final chapter in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s Batman saga begins, minus Sale, who passed away a few years back — though will be represented through covers for the issues of this series. Eduardo Risso joins on art for issue one, and if you missed it, DC is reprinting the “zero issue” on September 18.
13. The Nice House By The Sea #3
Release Date: September 25, 2024
The sequel to James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno’s horror series has, frankly, been even better than the original, thanks to multiple jaw-dropping twists in the first two issues. The art is superb, the characterizations unique, and this is a sci-fi series unlike any other. Go back and read the first one, get on board with the second one, and close your jaw, I don’t need to see the inside of your mouth.
