1. Public Domain #8

Public Domain #8

Release Date: September 4, 2024

Chip Zdarsky’s exploration of the comic book industry continues, and as I noted with last month’s issues this title has gone to another level since it came back from hiatus. Fast, funny, deeply moving; it’s inside baseball, but if you’re a comic book fan, it’s one baseball game you’ll want to check out.

2. Scarlett #4

Scarlett #4

Release Date: September 4, 2024

Everything from Skybound’s Energon Universe has been killer, but the action in Scarlett has been next level. Basically what if James Bond was a lady with swords, with the neat emotional hook of, Scarlett is just trying to get her friend back. Except it’s from ninjas.

3. Transformers #12

Transformers #12

Release Date: September 11, 2024

The second arc of the hit book ends with the Autobots facing down the Decepticons, with Cybertron looming in the sky. Big stuff! It’s also the final issue with Jorge Corona on art, though Daniel Warren Johnson will continue on until issue #24.

4. The Department Of Truth #25

The Department Of Truth #25

Release Date: September 11, 2024

Speaking of books that have returned stronger than ever, Department of Truth came back swinging with an arc all about the assassination of JFK. Shockingly timely, the past few issues have also fleshed out the mythology of the conspiracy theory exponentially.

5. The Moon Is Following Us #1

The Moon Is Following Us #1

Release Date: September 18, 2024

Daniel Warren Johnson and Riley Rossmo team up for a new, epic fantasy series. What more do you want? Okay, how about beyond the superb art, this story of two parents trying to get their daughter back from evil forces is exactly the sort of punch in the gut you’d expect from this team. A stellar first issue you won’t want to miss.

6. Violator: Origin #1

Violator: Origin #1

Release Date: September 18, 2024

Will we find out Violator, the evil clown demon, was once a boy named James Howlett living in the Canadian wilderness? Unclear! But we do know the unreliable narrator will be telling his own story, with six different artists over six issues.

7. Ultramega #5

Ultramega #5

Release Date: September 18, 2024

The Kaiju mash-up returns after a lengthy break! James Harren draws, Dave Stewart colors, worlds shake and crumble.

8. The Power Fantasy #2

The Power Fantasy #2

Release Date: September 18, 2024

Kieron Gillen and Caspar Wjingard’s hit series continues. The concept? There are six people with superpowers on Earth, and they can never meet. The first issue was a heady mix of wild action and big ideas, and we’d expect the second issue to be more of the same.

9. Destro #4

Destro #4 cover

Release Date: September 18, 2024

Another very fun Energon Universe series, this one looks at the satirical side of war profiteering, aka the funniest profession.

10. The Horizon Experiment #1

The Horizon Experiment #1

Release Date: September 25, 2024

Pornsak Pichetshote’s Horizon Experiment takes genre tales and infuses them with culturally specific takes from diverse creators. Here, Pornsak takes on a James Bond story, but set in China, with The Manchurian. If the comic sells well, we’ll get more.

11. Knights Vs. Samurai #1

Knights vs. Samurai #1 cover

Release Date: September 25, 2024

You know what this is from the title! And that’s sort of the point of David Dastmalchian’s new comic book, which finds a knight stranded on a dangerous island filled with samurai.

12. Violent Flowers #1

Violent Flowers #1

Release Date: September 25, 2024

Always read a Maria Llovet book, and this one has to do with vampires, so read it twice.

13. Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #2

Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #2 cover

Release Date: September 25, 2024

Having read this issue in advance, just like issue one it’s an absolute banger. A perfect mix of horror and pathos that completely recontextualizes the classic movie, from writer/artist Michael Walsh. This issue, find out about the monster’s brain.

14. Saga #69

Saga #69

Release Date: September 25, 2024

Nice.
