Episode Transcript:
Spoiler warning on! On today’s episode, we’re going full spoilers for three of today’s biggest new comics: Avengers vs. Aliens, Archie: The Decision, and Absolute Power: Origins.
This is Comic Book Club News for August 28, 2024.
Aliens Vs. Avengers Reveals Symbiotes Are More Powerful Than The Xenomorph:
Spoiler item number one! Aliens vs. Avengers #1 debuts today from Marvel, written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Esad Ribić. And it reveals the one thing in the Marvel Universe more powerful than a xenomorph.
Specifically, it’s symbiotes, as Miles Morales discovers towards the end of the issue. In the series, we’re introduced early on to a version of the Earth that has been completely overrun by the xenomorphs. Most of the heroes and villains are already dead. And the last human city is protected by an old Captain Marvel, an old Hulk, and an adult Miles Morales.
When a face hugger gets free and attacks Miles, it seems like it’s game over, man. That is until it turns out Miles is wearing a symbiote, which takes over the face hugger and saves Miles. The symbiote then rejoins with Miles, giving him a fun new spider/facehugger almagam logo.
Or as a character who either may be Weyland, of Weyland Yutani, or Iron Man says, “symbiote seemingly trumps xenomorph.”
And so, Hickman launched something that will likely continue to be a debate for decades to come. Or settled one, either way.
Who Does Archie Choose In Archie: The Decision?
Spoiler item number two! Today, Archie Comics finally settles the biggest question in the history of the medium: will Archie choose Betty or Veronica? Or… Do they?
In Archie: The Decision by Tom King and Dan Parent, Archie does make a decision — but it’s only a decision to make a decision. At the urging of Jughead, he flips a coin to figure out if he should pick Betty or Veronica… And then the coin flies out the window and rolls throughout Riverdale, as the rest of the town chases after him.
When he finally catches the coin, the town confronts him and demands to know: Betty, or Veronica? Only Archie, true to form, forgot to call the coin toss.
And so, the eternal struggle continues. Or as Jughead explains via a Kierkegaard quote, it’s not the result that matters, it’s understanding ourselves and each other along the way.
Absolute Power: Origins Reveals How Amanda Waller Stole Superheroes’s Powers:
Spoiler item number three! One of the biggest mysteries with the currently running Absolute Power event in DC Comics is how Amanda Waller is stealing all the heroes’s powers. Well, that gets revealed in Absolute Power: Origins #2.
The culprit? A character named Cyclotron, who appeared in one issue of Suicide Squad from 2017. In the issue, as retold here, the Suicide Squad is sent on their first mission — which goes awry thanks to Cyclotron. Amanda Waller has him blown up… But by using his corpse, her scientists are able to utilize his powers to create a device that “absorbs and matches metas’ biological pulses.” Or in colloquial terms, negates their powers.
So there you go! A most likely forgotten plot point from a seven-year-old comic book is crucial to understanding DC’s currently running event. It’s just what Cyclotron would have wanted.
