It’s slim pickings if you’re a comic book fan at the ol’ movie theater this Fall. Sure, there are a few big releases coming your way. But unlike years past, our Fall 2024 comic book movie preview is sans any actual Marvel Studios releases, in particular.
Don’t worry, if you are a comic book fan and a fan of adaptations, there’s plenty to check out over the next few months. That includes the highly anticipated/dreaded Joker: Folie À Deux, what looks to be the final entry in the Venom trilogy and more.
But just to flesh out the list a little bit, we also included a couple of comics-related movies, as well. So let’s get into our Fall 2024 comic book movie preview with one of those, first!
Transformers One
Release Date: September 20, 2024
Before they transformed and rolled out, they were just a bunch of buddy robots that hung out together on Cybertron. The animated film stars Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, and throws Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm, Laurence Fishburne, Steve Buscemi, and more into the cast, just so you know they’re serious. This isn’t based on a comic book, but if you love Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers comic from Skybound, you’re going to want to check this out, as well.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story
Release Date: September 21, 2024
This documentary tells the true story, through archival footage and new interviews, of Christopher Reeve — the man who became Superman for a generation, and then was paralyzed after a horseback riding accident. But he didn’t stop there, as Reeve became Superman in real life for anyone trying to fight back from paralyzation, thanks to his advocacy for stem cell research. the movie debuts for one day via Fathom Events, with encore showings on September 25 for the anniversary of Reeve’s birthday.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man
Release Date: September 27, 2024 (UK)
Curiously, the latest reboot of Hellboy doesn’t have a US release date yet. However, if you’re in the UK you can check it out in September in theaters. It stars Jack Kesy as Hellboy and is based on The Crooked Man miniseries by Mike Mignola and Joshua Dysart, with art by Richard Corben, Jason Shawn Alexander, and Duncan Fegredo. Notably, this back-to-basics approach to Hellboy has a script co-written by Mignola and frequent collaborator Christopher Golden.
Joker: Folie à Deux
Release Date: October 4, 2024
Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is back in this sequel to the billion-plus-grossing The Joker. The twisted mind of Todd Phillips is back too in the directing chair, and this time around they’ve added Lady Gaga to the cast as Harleen Quinzel. Don’t worry, despite the 15+ musical numbers, it’s definitely not a musical, according to Phillips. Also, Harley Quinn is completely different, and Arthur will never fully become The Joker. Just a suggestion, maybe make another movie? I don’t know.
Venom: The Last Dance
Release Date: October 25, 2024
The goofiest comic book-based series in existence comes to a close with Venom: The Last Dance. Tom Hardy is back as Eddie Brock/Venom and is joined by Juno Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rhys Ifans, and more. Will it be as unhinged as Venom? Or as relatively hinged as Venom: Let There Be Carnage? Hopefully the former.
Here
Release Date: November 1, 2024
Tom Hanks follows up starring in 2002’s “wait that was based on a comic book?” movie Road to Perdition with this year’s “wait, that’s based on a comic book?” movie Here. But the Robert Zemeckis feature is indeed based on Here by Richard McGuire. Originally published as a six-page strip in Raw, it was eventually fleshed out into a full graphic novel published by Pantheon in 2014. The conceit of the story — and the movie — is that it presents decades from the perspective of one fixed location, from barren land to the future… And a family who lives and dies there over time.
Kraven The Hunter
Release Date: December 13, 2024
After multiple delays and a slew of reshoots, Sony seems to be pretending Kraven the Hunter will finally come out in theaters this December. Likely story, Sony. Fool me once, and all that. Anyway, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular hunter, who has lion powers here for some reason. Russell Crowe also stars, and gets to do another fun accent. And there’s a human Rhino in the movie, too. Is this what you’re Kraven in superhero movies?
Sonic The Hedgehog 3
Release Date: December 20, 2024
To bookend this preview with movies that are only tangentially related to comics (IDW currently publishes Sonic the Hedgehog and spinoffs), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 brings back the main cast and adds Keanu Reeves as the voice of Shadow, Sonic’s evil opposite. Here’s hoping Sonic doesn’t kill his dog!
