If you didn’t expect to be sobbing at a movie trailer this morning, well, get ready. The first-ever DC Studios movie isn’t next year’s Superman; it’s Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. And the three-plus minute trailer that dropped this morning is a heartbreaking — and uplifting — look at the life of the late, great actor.
Through both archival footage and new interviews with everyone from Reeve’s children to Glenn Close and Susan Sarandon, we see Reeve becoming Superman in the iconic movies… Followed by his shocking horseriding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
But that was far from the end of Reeve’s story. Proving that he was Superman in real life as well as on-screen, he turned his tragedy into advocacy for spinal injury research, and to provide a model for children (and adults) in similar conditions. If Superman could suffer an injury like this and fight through it, they could too.
The documentary has already gotten rave reviews from critics thanks to screenings at the Sundance Film Festival. That includes DC Studios head James Gunn… Who loved the movie so much that he made it the first movie under the new DC Studios label, not his own 2025 debuting Superman film.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, and will debut in limited release in theaters on September 21 and 25, 2024. Watch the first trailer below, but keep your tissues handy.
