Daniel Warren Johnson Leaving Transformers With Issue #24

We’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that Daniel Warren Johnson will be sticking around on Skybound and Image Comics’s hit Transformers past issue #12. The bad news? Johnson’s final issue will be Transformers #24.

The news comes via a Reddit AMA held by Johnson and Riley Rossmo to answer questions about their (excellent) upcoming title The Moon is Following Us. However, questions quickly turned to Transformers, the Energon Universe title that’s currently tearing up the sales charts.

In response to a question about how long he’s planning on sticking around, Johnson wrote, “I’m having a blast writing it now and Jorge and Mike are absolutely slaying the art. I am going to be writing for a total of 24 issues.”

Johnson is referring to artist Jorge Corona and colorist Mike Spicer, who took over art duties from Johnson starting with Transformers #6. With October’s Transformers #13, Jason Howard will be jumping in for Corona and will be around at least until November’s Transformers #14.

Following up, another Redditor asked whether he could stick around to issue 50 or 100 instead. To which Johnson replied, “Honestly, I’m having so much fun I would love to. But when I make anything, writing, drawing, or both, I only know how to go 110 percent. So all that to say, I’m killing myself and can only go for so long. My choice to leave at 24 is more of a choice for my mental health and for my family than however I may feel about my wonderful Cybertronians. Thank you for your support!”

So, there you go! Daniel Warren Johnson is leaving Transformers with issue #24. If the title stays on schedule, his final issue should hit stores sometime in September 2025. Who will take over writing duties next? We have about a year to wait, to find out.
