Is there any comic book cover more iconic than Jim Lee’s gatefold for 1991’s X-Men #1? Maybe, maybe not — I’ll let you argue that one in your own time. But it is iconic, and Valiant Comics and Alien are paying tribute to the man, the myth, the legend with artist Richard Ortiz’s take… Which will “fold” out over four different titles being released in November, and Comic Book Club has your first exclusive look.
“After cover artist Richard Ortiz blew us away with his AMAZING covers for Ninjak vs. Roku, we knew we had to show off more of his work to the comic book world. And what better way to spotlight his talent than creating Alien Books’ first-ever connecting covers?” explained Alien Books Art Director Martin Casanova, via a statement provided to Comic Book Club.
“Richard did an amazing job with the homage to the all-time best-selling comic book, X-MEN #1, by one of the best comic book artists in history (if not the all-time best,) the incredible Mr. Jim Lee. When we were coming up with the initial ideas for November’s variant cover theme, we went through a lot of different homages (and luckily we didn’t do any of those ideas, because Deadpool & Wolverine beat us to the punch on them!) and ultimately we realized that with 4 covers available, we could homage the most famous interconnecting variant cover in comics history!”
This month sees the release of Swimsuit variants from the publisher. In September, just in time for bat to school, it’s Batman variants. And things get downright spooky with Classic Movie Monsters in October. Want to see what they look like all together? You got it, friend:
