Star Wars is about to break new ground with its first canonical LGBTQ+ wedding. The event of the year — and maybe the millennium — will happen in Dark Horse Comics’ Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures Phase III – The Wedding Spectacular One Shot.
Written by Daniel José Older with art by Harvey Tolibao, Toni Bruno, Nick Brokenshire, and more, the new comic will take place, per the cover, “a century before The Acolyte” and focus on the wedding of Lula Talisola and Zeen Mrala. In the High Republic books, the two have been part of the resistance against the villainous Nihil, but take a break to gather their friends and family to get married on Eriadu.
Per a release provided by Dark Horse, “Friends and family throughout the galaxy will be joining in the celebration of light, life and love. But just in case, the dress code does include holstered weapons, as war could break out at any moment!”
While Star Wars has featured LGBTQ+ characters before, notably Sana Starros and Doctor Aphra among others, this is (as far as I’m aware) the first female-female wedding that’s been held in the franchise’s history. And that’s certainly something to celebrate.
Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures Phase III – The Wedding Spectacular One Shot will also feature colors by Michael Atiyeh and letters by Comicraft. The main cover for the issue is by Cherriielle, with variants by 5healthMONO and Priscilla Bampoh. The issue will cost $5.99, and hit comic book stores on December 18, 2024.
