In October, spinning off the end of the currently running Absolute Power event, DC is splitting in two. On one side as part of the DC All In initiative is the mainline DC Universe. On the other is the much darker Absolute Universe. And when Comic Book Club sat down with writer Scott Snyder at TerrifiCon this past weekend, he teased where that darkness is coming from: it’s “incubating a Darkseid.”
As part of a longer conversation about his role in DC All In, as well as writing the upcoming Absolute Batman, Snyder dropped the tease while describing what separates the two universes.
“We’ll tell a story with Darkseid and the Justice League, and this All In number one, like Rebirth number one, that kind of thing that essentially creates a new universe,” Snyder said. “There’s only two right now, the multiverse in Absolute Power. You’ll see something happens where, without giving anything away, the cosmology is rearranged because of this big thing that happens with Darkseid. And because of that, a new universe is born. And this universe is essentially incubating a Darkseid… The energy there, the feel of it, is chaotic and fluid, zigzaggy, it’s a very wild place.”
Previously, Snyder and Joshua Williamson teased that the main DC Universe will be infused with “Superman energy” after the events of the DC All In Special. Meanwhile, the new Absolute Universe will be filled with “Darkseid energy.” They also teased that arch-villain Darkseid will discover something during Absolute Power that will set him on a path to potential victory in the DC All In Special.
Snyder’s choice of words, “incubating a Darkseid,” are particularly interesting given info that was revealed as part of DC’s November solicits. Spoilers past this point, but in the synopsis for Justice League Unlimited #1, DC Comics teases, “In the wake of Absolute Power and the DC All In Special, Darkseid’s death has triggered a massive power vacuum in the DCU.”
So, perhaps this is adding two and two and making five here, but if Darkseid discovers something that could make him win, he dies in the DC All In Special, and the Absolute Universe is “incubating a Darkseid…” Is it possible that the ruler of Apokolips realizes that by dying he can be reborn in a new universe, one he’s destined to rule? And more importantly, is Baby Darkseid incoming?
We’ll have to wait until the DC All In Special #1 hits stores on October 6 to find out. You can check out the rest of our chat with Snyder for a lot more about Absolute Universe, as well as his take on Absolute Batman, and more.
