‘Suicide Squad Isekai’ Ending Explained: Will There Be A Season 2?

Suicide Squad Isekai

The first season of Suicide Squad Isekai is in the books after today’s episode. And we’re gonna need a second season after that surprise twist ending. Wondering what happened? Need a Suicide Squad Isekai ending explained? And wondering if there will be a Suicide Squad Isekai Season 2? We’ve got you covered.

Obviously, spoiler warning past this point for the Suicide Squad Isekai finale. But if you do want to know what happened, here’s a recap, some other info, and our speculation about a second season for the anime series.

Suicide Squad Isekai Recap:

To blast through this as simply as possible, the anime series is created by Warner Bros. Japan and Wit Studio, and takes the Suicide Squad you know and transports them to another, magical fantasy world. It’s playing off the tropes of Isekai, which the New York Public Library defines as “a subgenre of fantasy in which a character is suddenly transported from their world into a new or unfamiliar one.”

Helpfully, Clayface defines it that way, too, as he, Harley Quinn, King Shark, Deadshot, and Peacemaker all find themselves sent by Amanda Waller to infiltrate this fantasy realm. They crash land and quickly discover they’re stuck in the middle of a war between a kingdom of mostly humans, and the mysterious Empire. Not only that but a previous iteration of the Suicide Squad comprised of Katana, Ratcatcher, The Thinker, Enchantress, and Killer Croc were sent there — and are now working as generals for The Empire.

Throughout the season, our version of the Suicide Squad takes down Ratcatcher and Thinker, while also dealing with an increasingly angry Queen who seemingly doesn’t want them to succeed in taking down The Empire. Turns out, that’s because Queen Aldora is secretly The Lich King, and wants to see death consume the whole world.

An all-out battle ensues, with the Lich King hovering over the kingdom, and the Suicide Squad attempting to fight back. One big problem? The Lich King has Enchantress under her control. Harley tries to take her down thanks to Arthur, the dragon she raised from an egg, but no dice. Meanwhile, Deadshot has teamed up with Cecil, the general for the kingdom he previously sparred with. King Shark battles Killer Croc and a big, underwater beastie in the river. And Clayface and Rick Flag — who was stuck in the kingdom after bringing in the first Suicide Squad — discover that someone looking just like Enchantress is stuck inside a skeletal dragon.

Help comes from a surprising source: Katana, who slices the dragon in half, so they can drag the body of June Moon, Enchantress’ human half, to free the magical villain from the Lich King’s thrall. Around the same time, Peacemaker turns the beastie who was attacking King Shark to their side, and it eats Killer Croc — much to King Shark’s chagrin because they hit a stalemate. And Deadshot discovers the mystical armor Cecil is wearing can power them all up.

Cut to a magical girl transformation sequence for the whole team as they battle back the Lich King’s undead army. They’re not able to break through her defenses, though, until Harley hatches a scheme. Princess Fione who has been helping the Suicide Squad all season long and is obsessed/in love with Harley, now looks like the clown princess of crime. So Harley dresses Fione like her, gets close to the Lich King, summons a magic sword that’s been in King Shark’s stomach since the beginning of the season, and beheads the big baddie. Then she uses Harley’s bat to knock the head into the sun.

Joker Suicide Squad Isekai Ending Explained

While the Squad, Fione, and Cecil celebrate their victory, there’s more to come. Rick Flag calls Amanda Waller and asks if the primary mission is still a go. While Flag has been publically saying that the goal is to stabilize the kingdom enough so that Waller can set up a trade of resources between there and Earth, there’s a big goal.

Turns out the guy in charge of the Empire, the new Emperor, is none other than The Joker. And in fact, he’s been masquerading as everyone from Thinker, to Ratcatcher, to even the Lich King, all season long. How is The Joker pretending to look like all these other characters? “Magic staff” seems to be the answer here.

But why? Waller explains that he most likely is doing this as revenge for her kidnapping Harley and sending her to the magic land. It’s all a little confusing timeline-wise, but my best guess here is that the OG Suicide Squad never existed. Since time moves differently in the magic land, when Katana took down Harley in the first episode, The Joker got to the magical other world first. He impersonated all the other characters including the Lich King, in order to sow chaos, according to Waller. So Rick’s primary goal the whole time was to kill The Joker, not get resources, or take back the original Suicide Squad team.

The real goal, though, is revealed by The Joker in the final moments of the episode: he wanted to give Harley an adventure in a new world since she was getting bored on Earth. That’s pretty much it. He did this all for her.

“Has this new world scratched your itch?” The Joker asks. “Or do you want more?”

Obviously he’s talking to Harley — but also the audience, too. And yeah: we want more.

How Many Episodes Are There Of Suicide Squad Isekai?

This week’s 10th episode on Max is the final episode of Suicide Squad Isekai Season 1… There’s no more after this, for the moment at least. So yeah: no 11th episode of Suicide Squad Isekai, or a Suicide Squad Isekai Season 1, Part 2, or anything like that.

The only “new” episodes of Suicide Squad Isekai that will be released are the English dub versions. Usually, they hit about a week after the regular, subtitled versions. Though as of this writing, the Episode 9 English dub has yet to debut. Maybe later today! I don’t know.

Will There Be A Suicide Squad Isekai Season 2?

As of this writing, a Suicide Squad Isekai Season 2 is very much TBA. As detailed, the season finale leaves things open for a Season 2, and there’s potentially a lot more plot to go. However, Warner Bros. Japan and Wit Studio haven’t announced whether there’s more to come.

Throwing things in doubt, this is one of the last projects that’s under the old DC Studios banner… You can see the animated, character-packed opening to the series. That’s versus Batman: Caped Crusader on Prime Video, for example, which carries the new DC Studios logo. Some animated projects are continuing regardless, like Max’s Harley Quinn animated series. But the future of things like Suicide Squad Isekai and other animated projects are in flux as we don’t know exactly what will happen under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s control of DC Studios.

Granted, they’ve been pretty lenient about ongoing projects. A series of Watchmen animated movies just debuted. And Superman & Lois is getting to wrap up on its own terms. But we’ll have to stay tuned to see if the Suicide Squad will travel to another world… Again.
