If there’s one thing you can trust a Sony/Marvel production to do, it’s doggedly stick to the idea that injecting yourself with animal blood will give you the powers of that animal. Enter The Rhino in the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, who has been revealed in full thanks to the new trailer for the supervillain pic.
Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven, aka Sergei Kravinoff, the new look lays out some of the plot of the movie… He’s a hunter who has vague lion powers — a lion bled into him when he was younger or something — with a gangster father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), and a criminal brother, Dmitri Smerdyakov (Fred Hechinger). Though the trailer doesn’t reveal this, Dmitri is Spider-Man villain The Chameleon, a master of disguise.
Also spotted in the trailer is Ariana DeBose as Calypso, a voodoo priestess — and surprisingly one of the only actors in the movie that is not attempting a fun accent. Thank goodness (nothing against DeBose, to be clear).
But the main event here in this ponderous two-plus minutes of footage scored to Johnny Cash’s “When The Man Comes Around” is the reveal of The Rhino. Alessandro Nivola plays Aleksei Sytsevich, a mercenary who turns into a rhinoceros man. Here, check him out in action:
This is different than the Rhino in the comics, who is a regular man stuck in a rhinoceros suit. I’ll leave it up to you to decide who is more authentic to the rhinoceros experience, but one of them is definitely a RINO (Rhinoceros In Name Only) Rhino.
