What if… The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) had no more stories to tell? That may be a question folks will be asking once Disney+’s What If…? comes to a close with Season 3, as officially announced at D23.
First premiering in 2021, the conceit of the series is that the Watcher, a being who sees all and knows all, has been observing the multiverse for millennia. Here, he shows us, the viewer, stories from timelines slightly different from the MCU, from what if Star-Lord was T’Challa, to what if everything took place in 1602?
In Season 3? Characters include White Vision, Wong, Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, Ironheart, as well as a return appearance by Scarlet Witch. There will also be an episode where the characters fight in a mech, similar to Power Rangers or Voltron. It’s TBA whether the voices for the “new” characters will include screen actors like Paul Bettany, Benedict Wong, Simu Liu, and Oscar Isaac, as it’s been a mixed bag before.
As previously revealed, an episode will focus on Red Guardian and include Bucky Barnes, Bill Foster, and Ranger Morales. It was originally produced for Season 2.
While the series was pitched as standalone episodes, it became quickly serialized, with Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter as a main character. And in Season 2, it introduced an original character, Kahhori (Devery Jacobs). The show also spawned an interactive episode on Apple Vision Pro, and a spinoff — Marvel Zombies — which should be released later this year.
What If…? was created by A.C. Bradley, who also serves as EP for the series. No premiere date for What If…? Season 3 has been announced as of yet.
