Spinning out of What If…?, Marvel Zombies has been a long-in-the-works series focusing on that one version of the MCU where everyone eats brains. And while we still don’t have a premiere date, we do have some more info on the series, thanks to D23.
Running for four episodes, the Disney+ animated series is rated TV-MA… Presumably for violence, not sexual content or anything like that. But maybe! Not sure.
At D23, director Bryan Andrews revealed the idea to spin off the series came from Marvel chief Kevin Feige, who saw What If…? Season 1’s “What If…? Zombies?!” and said, “We need more of this.”
And more he shall get! Revealed at D23, at least some part of the series will include the characters from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings surviving in a Mad Max-style wasteland, specifically Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and Awkwafina’s Katy. Unknown at this time is whether the actors will reprise their voices for the animated show.
One MCU actor we do know will be returning? Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel. In an interview with Khan, the actress revealed that her character from Ms. Marvel and The Marvels is “the Frodo of the story.” What her One Ring is, and who her Sam is? We don’t know.
Other non-zombie MCU characters who will show up in the series include Yelena Belova, Kate Bishop, Red Guardian, Jimmy Woo, and Death Dealer. Zombies include Hawkeye, Captain America, Abomination, Ghost, Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, Ikaris and Okoye. Like the Shang-Chi actors, it’s unknown at this time who will voice the roles.
The series is created by Zeb Wells, who also co-wrote Deadpool & Wolverine, and is wrapping up a long run on Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man. No premiere date for Marvel Zombies has been announced yet.
