This is Comic Book Club News for August 9, 2024.

Wesley Snipes’ Graphic Novel Exiled Is Getting Collected by Massive:

Wesley Snipes is so hot right now with his surprise appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. And now, Massive Publishing is getting in on that sweet Snipes action with a new printing of his graphic novel The Exiled.

Originally released via Kickstarter in 2022, followed by a monthly comic book release through Whatnot in 2023, The Exiled focuses on a detective named Niles “Roach” Washington who is pursuing a serial killer tied to an ancient conspiracy. Does the main character look sort of like and act a lot like Wesley Snipes? Who is to say?

Well, Snipes, maybe, who said via press release provided to Comic Book Club: “Comics let you explore big worlds. Since Blade, I have been attracted to origin stories and developing characters. Now, I get to build ‘Roach’ as a character from the ground up and I dig that.”

The series is written in collaboration with Adam Lawson and Keith Arem with art by Eskivo, and this new collected edition is the first time the series will be available to the mass market as a trade. It will hit stores in November but is available for pre-order now.

Will Eisner’s John Law Is Getting Collected By Titan:

A lesser comic book talent than Wesley Snipes, but still having a first name that begins with a “W”: Will Eisner’s classic John Law is getting a brand new collection from Titan.

Appropriately titled The Collected Will Eisner’s John Law, the 152-page book will include out-of-print stories from Eisner, as well as a never before printed John Law tale. In case you’re not familiar, that’s okay… The book was kind of a failure. As Titan explains in their press release, Eisner produced an issue of John Law Detective in 1948. But after three other comics he created didn’t hit, it never went to newsstands, with Eisner reusing much of the artwork in 1950 for The Spirit.

This new volume includes Eisner’s stories, as well as a 2004 reboot by Gary Chaloner, and a new forward by Denis Kitchen. It will hit stores on March 4, 2025.

DSTLRY Raises $5 Million:

DSTLRY, the high-end print and digital publisher, has raised $5 million in seed money. Which is going to lead to a wild vegetable garden, and I’m being told that’s not what seed money means.

Per GamesBeat, that raises the total money DSTLRY has raised since 2022 to $7.4 million. That money will be used to sign more creators, and “expand features set for DSTLRY’s digital marketplace.”

Happily, as reported by The Beat, which is somehow not related to GamesBeat, none of this funding has to do with anything AI and is instead about beefing up their already good deals for creators — the goal is to pay writers and artists an actual living wage — and make their marketplace more robust. And if anyone can do it, DSTLRY can: two of the main guys behind the company were two of the main guys behind Comixology.

At the very least, they’re doing a great job of not collecting comic book series by anyone whose first name starts with a “W.”

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And sorry about spoiling that whole Blade thing, but it’s been on the internet for weeks. So I’m not actually sorry.
