Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy is now on Netflix. But is this the last season of Umbrella Academy? Will there be a Season 5?

Not to get all Magritte on you, but this is an article. As for whether Umbrella Academy Season 4 is really the end, or if there’s more after the final episode, “End of the Beginning,” read on. We’ll also cover possible spinoffs of the series, as well as what’s next for the comic book source material.

Is This The Last Season Of Umbrella Academy? Will There Be A Season 5 Of Umbrella Academy?

Yes, Season 4 is the last season of Umbrella Academy on Netflix. Unlike previous seasons, which had 10 episodes each, this one only runs six. That’s not a mistake, there’s no Umbrella Academy Season 4, Part 2 coming later this year… Early on Netflix decided to shorten the season to six episodes. Showrunner Steve Blackman reportedly wanted eight episodes but agreed to six before the season went into production. No House of the Dragon shenanigans here!

If you’re troubled or confused by the last episode, though, we’ve got an Umbrella Academy Season 4 Ending Explained for you to check out. But yeah… After “End of the Beginning” and that enigmatic end credits scene, the Umbrella Academy has closed forever. There won’t be a Season 5 of the show, sad to say.

Will There Be Umbrella Academy Spinoffs On Netflix?

So Umbrella Academy is done, but what about possible spinoffs of the series? Blackman discussed the possibility with THR, noting that he has a ton of ideas — but it’s up to Netflix.

“It is really up to Netflix at the end of the day — and we’ve talked about it and it’s a lot of variables in play — but I think there’s a great story in young Hazel [Cameron Britton] and Cha-Cha [Blige] down the road,” Blackman said. “There’s obviously the Commission. I think there’s wonderful stories also with some other secondary characters. Then what’s wonderful about our world is we could crossover with our main characters anytime we want to because in a wonderful time-traveling world, you can end up with anyone anytime you want. There are ideas, there’s things I’ve talked about, and if Netflix decides down the road, I’d love to do it. But ultimately Netflix will make that decision. I hope this isn’t the end of Umbrella Academy. I hope there’s another iteration somewhere down the road.”

However, one spinoff that won’t be happening is The Sparrow Academy. First introduced in Season 2, the Sparrow Academy comes from a different timeline than The Umbrella Academy, though has at least one of the same characters (Justin H. Min’s Ben). Whether the show would have followed those characters in their main timeline, or in the new timeline created at the end of Season 4… Well, it doesn’t matter now, because it’s not happening.

The news came via Rolling Stone during a lengthy exposé on Blackman’s alleged behavior toward writers on The Umbrella Academy. Blackman flatly denied the story in the above-linked THR interview. But in the RS piece, it was confirmed by a representative for Netflix that Sparrow Academy is not moving forward.

Will There Be More Umbrella Academy Comics?

The great news is that there will most likely be more Umbrella Academy comics from Dark Horse Comics, and co-creators Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. The last we heard was in 2020 when Way and Bá announced a miniseries titled The Sparrow Academy — which was loosely adapted for Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy TV series. Sure it’s been four years… But the duo takes the time they need to tell the story they want. So stay tuned.
