With the final season of The Umbrella Academy now on Netflix, it’s fair to be worried about your favorite characters. After all, there are no more episodes, no spinoffs… After this, it’s all done. So who dies in Umbrella Academy Season 4?
Spoilers past this point, but the better question is: who doesn’t die? Like in seasons past, Season 4 ends in an apocalypse. But this apocalypse is different because the characters want it to happen. You can read more about how and why they want it to happen in our Umbrella Academy Season 4 ending explained. But suffice it to say that barely anyone makes it out of Season 4 alive.
You want answers though — and names — so you can know if your fave is marked safe in the Umbrella Academy Season 4 massacre. They probably weren’t, so steal your heart here. I won’t mark down every single random extra who gets murdered… For example, in Episode 2 the team slaughters the entire town of New Grumpson, Maine. But I will jot down a list of major characters who die on screen in Umbrella Academy Season 4, and how they go out. So, let’s get into it.
Who Dies In Umbrella Academy Season 4? A List Of Major Character Deaths:
- Viktor Hargreeves (Eliot Page): Viktor dies by letting The Cleanse take him, and is wiped clean from the timeline. Short version: the Marigold that gives Viktor his powers needs to be taken from the timeline. Subsequently, all timelines are collapsed into one, where the Umbrella Academy never existed. It’s a utopia without them… Though in the end credits scene, eight marigolds pop up, possibly indicating Viktor and the rest are around in some form.
- Luther Hargreeves (Tom Hopper): Also taken by The Cleanse. In fact, the whole family stands around in a circle and lets it happen.
- Diego Hargreeves (David Castañeda): Taken by the Cleanse. He dies holding hands with his wife, Lila, forgiving her for cheating on him with Five in an alternate timeline.
- Allison Hargreeves (Emmy Raver-Lampman): Taken by the Cleanse.
- Klaus Hargreeves (Robert Sheehan): Taken by the Cleanse.
- Five Hargreeves (Aidan Gallagher): Taken by the Cleanse.
- Lila Pitts (Ritu Arya): Taken by the Cleanse, dies holding hands with both Diego and Five.
- Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min): Ben is The Cleanse, having merged into an enormous monster with Jennifer that is tasked with wiping the world clean. Technically we don’t see him die, but as the timeline disappears, one can assume he does, too. He also sorta died the second he took a one way ticket to bone town with Jennifer.
- Jennifer (Victoria Sawal): As the other half of The Cleanse, Jennifer dies as well. Or disappears. Whichever.
- Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore): This is an alternate universe version of Reginald introduced in Season 2, as he often likes to clarify. He gives himself to The Cleanse while sitting on a park bench with his wife, after realizing the world is better off without him.
- Abigail Hargreeves (Liisa Repo-Martell): Having created the Marigold and its opposite particle, Durango, she’s the one who convinces Reginald to give himself up to The Cleanse. In fact, she manipulated the whole situation by first dressing like David Cross, then Nick Offerman in order to bring Ben and Jennifer into contact with each other — and then keep them in contact — so the Cleanse could begin.
- Gene Thibedeau (Nick Offerman): He gets killed by a tentacle from Sy Grossman (David Cross), who is actually Abigail, who FYI is an alien.
- Jean Thibedeau (Megan Mullaly): Dies getting sliced with a sword outside the department store where Ben and Jennifer are turning into the Cleanse monster. However, he’s actually Abigail in disguise by that point.
- Teen Ben (Ethan Hwang): We discover that Young Ben died during The Jennifer Incident in the original timeline. What is The Jennifer Incident? He touched that timeline’s version of Jennifer, and Reginald shot them both to death. Classic.
- Teen Jennifer (Bri Roque): Also shot to death in the Jennifer Incident.
…And that’s it! Just pretty much every character! Allison’s daughter Claire (Millie Davis) and Lila’s whole family are saved by getting sent via interdimensional subway to another timeline… Which might mean they died, too, since all the timelines collapsed into one. And a ton of characters came back at the end in the utopia, including The Handler (Kate Walsh), Herb (Ken Hall), The Swedes, and Hazel (Cameron Britton) and his donut lady.
But yeah… RIP, Umbrella Academy. The world may not remember you, but we do.
