EC Comics is expanding.

This is Comic Book Club News for August 8, 2024.

DC Comics Launching New New Gods And JSA Titles:

File this one under: whoops, there was a lot going on at San Diego Comic-Con. Because the publisher announced at the con — which was weeks ago now — that they’ll be launching new JSA and New Gods titles, coming soon.

New Gods comes from writer Ram V and artist Evan Cagle, and will hit stores this December, revamping Kirby’s classic creations for a new generation. Per AIPT, the series will spin out of October’s DC All In Special, which causes a “cosmic imbalance which starts this spiral between New Genesis and Apokalips.”

The new JSA title will be written by Jeff Lemire with art by Diego Olortegui. While not much is known about this title, it will include the classic Justice Society line-up, as well as some younger characters from Infinity Inc.

That title should hit in October, and I’m sure it’s the last thing I missed from Comic-Con. Right?

IDW Re-Ups The License For Star Trek:

Okay fine, one more missed Comic-Con item: IDW has re-upped the license to print Star Trek comics — and money — for the foreseeable future.

While this will lead to the currently running Star Trek books from IDW continuing, they also announced a new book on the heels of this business venture… A new, ongoing series based on the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks.

The book will reunite the team behind the Eisner-nominated Shaxs’ Best Day, writer Ryan North, and artist Derk Charm, for the ongoing adventures of the gang on the USS Cerritos. Given that the series Lower Decks is ending with a fifth and final season running from October through December, and this title is debuting on November 13, 2024, it’ll most likely outlast the TV series itself. And that point, they’ll be boldly going… Well, you know the rest.

EC Comics Expands Line With New Titles:

You twisted my arm – one more San Diego catch-up story. After an incredibly successful launch, EC Comics is expanding. The rebooted imprint from Oni Press is adding two titles, and lengthening the run of one more.

Working backwards, horror anthology Epitaphs from the Abyss will now run 12 issues, instead of the planned five. After it wraps up its run next summer, it’ll segue into a new anthology TBA.

Meanwhile, Cruel Universe, the publisher’s sci-fi anthology, will transform into Cruel Kingdom, a fantasy anthology, and the first of its kind for EC. That will debut in January of 2025.

And last but not least, December sees the debut of Shiver Suspenstories, a one-shot featuring holiday-themed horror.

With all these announcements, I guess EC stands for “extra comics!”

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And seriously, I’m done with San Diego now. The city, not the Comic-Con.
