Is that Absolute Power death for real?

Doom gets collected!

The Tooth also gets collected!

This is Comic Book Club News for August 7, 2024.

Absolute Power #2 Seems To Kill Off Dreamer:

As of today’s Absolute Power #2, DC Comics’s big event is halfway done. And it sure seems like they just killed off a major character in the latest issue. But did they?

Spoilers for Absolute Power #2 past this point. In the series, Nia Nal, aka Dreamer, has been working for Amanda Waller under the threat of her family being killed if she rebels. And in this issue, Waller goes too far, attacking the defenseless, powerless heroes and forcing a Brainiac-ed out Jon Kent to attempt to kill his father, Superman.

Dreamer fights back and gives the heroes time to escape… Only to be caught in the resulting explosion of the Fortress of Solitude, with Waller thinking she’s dead. So did DC kill off Dreamer in the issue? All signs certainly point in that direction.

But yeah, no. They did not kill off Dreamer. The issue itself establishes she can near-instantaneously travel through dream portals. And not for nothing, but the publisher is not going to murder a character who is probably the most prominent trans superhero in comics history. While it looks like she’s dead here, I’d expect a “surprising” return in a future issue. Or perhaps I’m just dreaming.

Marvel Collects The Entire Run Of Christopher Cantwell’s Doom:

It’s about to be Doctor Doom all the time at Marvel thanks to the announcement of Robert Downey Jr. playing the classic villain on screen. And before Marvel launches their new “One World Under Doom” story in November, you can check out the entire run of Christopher Cantwell’s Doom title in trade.

Per ICv2, Marvel will release a 272-page trade collection featuring all 10 issues of Cantwell’s 2019 Doctor Doom series, the one-shot King in Black: Iron Man/Doctor Doom, and pages from War of the Realms: War Scrolls #3.

The series features art from Salvador Larocca and Cian Tormey and finds Doom trying to clear his name after the rare disaster he hasn’t caused — teaming him up with Kang, and bringing him to blows with MODOK, Mephisto, and more.

The trade will be released in October, and given this was most likely in the works well before the RDJ announcement, expect a lot more Doom as we get closer to the release of Avengers: Doomsday in 2026.

The Tooth Gets Collected By Dark Horse:

Cult classic series The Tooth, which has been out of print for years, is getting a new collection from Dark Horse Comics.

Per AIPT, The Tooth is a mash-up horror and adventure story featuring weird hero The Tooth, dragons, monsters, and more. It was written by Cullen Bunn, Shawn Lee, and Matt Kindt, and penciled by Kindt, and originally collected as a hardcover by Oni Press in 2011.

The new, 184 page paperback edition will feature a new cover by Kindt, and go on sale on February 4 in book stores and February 5 in comic book stores for $24.99.
