It’s August, and you know what that means… New comics this week! Also that happens every week, so whatever. But here are some highlights from the new comics for August 7, 2024.
Marvel ended the Blood Hunt last week, so now it’s time for Blood Hunters, a spinoff that is different than the four-issue title Blood Hunters that was released during Blood Hunt but also has some of the same characters. Meanwhile, if you’re missing event comics from the past seven days, then good news: Venom War kicks off this week. But my personal most anticipated title is Uncanny X-Men #1 from Gail Simone and David Marquez. That’s just a good team, right there.
Over at DC Comics, the high-paranoia Absolute Power event continues. Blue Beetle ends with issue #11. Gotham City Sirens replaces the regular Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman titles for a four-week event. And in this week’s issue of Birds of Prey, the girls go Chibi-style.
The biggest issue of the week, though, is Image Comics’s The Power Fantasy #1 from Kieron Gillen and Caspar Wjingard, which introduces a “real world” scenario of what would happen if six super-powered beings emerged. You’ve also got the release of EC Comics and Oni Press’s Cruel Universe #1, which contains one of the best short stories I’ve read in a long time. And it’s a double Eric Powell week at Dark Horse with new issues of The Goon and Lester of the Lesser Gods.
