One of the biggest burning questions out of Deadpool & Wolverine is a near-total mystery: why is Thor crying over Deadpool? Ryan Reynolds and Chris Hemsworth, who play Deadpool and Thor respectively, aren’t giving up the answer to this one. But we have some ideas anyway.
To review, and mild spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine past this point, in the movie Deadpool is taken to the TVA (Time Variance Authority) where he’s shown scenes from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Though most of the scenes are stuff that’s already happened — shots of the various Avengers movies, for example, play on the TVA screens — there’s one scene that shouldn’t be in there… Thor crying as he cradles Deadpool, the latter’s mask half torn off and his face bloodied.
“Is that me? Is that Thor? Is he crying?” Deadpool asks.
Mr. Paradox (Matthew MacFadyen), realizing that wasn’t supposed to be in the MCU montage, tries turn it off. “That happens in the distant future,” Paradox says.
Deadpool furiously whispers to a TVA underling, “Why is Thor crying? Quick, tell me!” But it’s too late, Mr. Paradox distracts Deadpool and moves on to the next thing… Though Deadpool does call back proudly to the moment several times later in the film.
Ryan Reynolds, for his part, has been playing with fans about the moment. On July 31, he posted on X (formerly Twitter), “I know why Thor was crying. I can’t unknow it.” Chris Hemsworth followed up yesterday (August 1) adding, “I can keep secrets too.”
So what is the secret? Why is Thor crying in Deadpool & Wolverine?
It’s A Repurposed Scene From Thor: The Dark World

Well, first of all, this is a repurposed scene from Thor: The Dark World, not new footage — of Thor, at least. In case you’ve erased the Marvel sequel from your memory, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) “dies” while fighting Kurse (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) in Svartalfheim. In that scene, Thor holds Loki the exact same way, with the exact same angle as in the Deadpool & Wolverine scene.
So yeah, there are some digital alterations there — the rocks under Deadpool’s head are a little different, and the blood on Thor’s face has been switched around. But it’s clearly footage that was reused from the previous movie, with new footage shot with Reynolds as Deadpool.
To be clear, this is still supposed to be a scene that happens in the future of the MCU. But when we loop back around to it, the directors, whoever they may be (cough, cough) will most likely reshoot this scene in full.
Thor Is Probably Crying Over Deadpool In Avengers: Secret Wars
But at what point in the future is Thor crying over Deadpool? Almost definitely in Avengers: Secret Wars. The upcoming sixth Avengers movie, directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo — see above for suspicious coughing — almost definitely takes place on a patchwork planet called Battleworld. There, the remains of multiple universes have been smashed together by Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) in an effort to save the multiverse, while making himself God Emperor of all that remains.
For clarity, I’m pulling liberally off the 2015 comic Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić. But I’ll be shocked if the 2027 debuting film doesn’t liberally adapt it in some way.
There’s also a very good chance that at least three of the universes we’ll see smashed together are the MCU (aka Earth-616), the X-Men universe (Earth-10005), and the Fantastic Four universe (number TBD). While we don’t know if that will happen in Avengers: Doomsday (the fifth film) or Secret Wars, it’s definitely gonna happen, bringing all these characters, including Deadpool and Thor, together for an epic mashup.
That’s what will bring Thor and Deadpool together, and we can only assume the crying is A) because they have become friends and B) Deadpool has made some sort of epic sacrifice to truly become a hero. Alternately, Deadpool spends most of the movie slicing onions, which is just as likely.
So there you go! While we don’t know the exact circumstances that led to the crying, this is the most likely scenario around how it will happen. See you in 2027?
