Image Comics keeps doing its thing in August 2024. While some publishers are running back-to-back events (cough, Marvel, cough), and others are biding their time until the soft reboot (cough, DC, cough), Image continues to do what it does best… Good books, good art, and most of all: good friends.
Okay, maybe not the last one, but as usual there’s a wide array of comics coming from Image this month. You’ve got a brand new highly anticipated book from Kieron Gillen and Caspar Wjingard. You’ve got a new graphic novel from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. And you’ve got so many Spawn books, Energon Universe books, and more.
So let’s get into it! Here are our picks for the 11 top Image Comics of August 2024, listed in chronological release order.
1. The Power Fantasy #1
Release Date: August 7, 2024
What if six people on Earth had superpowers? And what if they realized if they ever met it would destroy the world? That’s the concept here from this new book by Kieron Gillen and Caspar Wjingard, and it’s as good as you’d expect. Fans of The Wicked + The Divine will eat this one up, in particular. But more than that, this feels like the next evolution of superhero comics.
2. C.O.W.L.: 1964 #1
Release Date: August 7, 2024
A continuation of the classic comic book series, now set in the Massive-Verse, C.O.W.L. deals with the rapid expansion of a superhero union.
3. Public Domain #7
Release Date: August 7, 2024
The first arc of this book from Chip Zdarsky was good, but it feels like we’re off to the races with this second arc, which finds two takes on superhero The Domain rushing their way to market. This month also sees the release of The Domain #2, a spinoff featuring the comic inside the world of this comic.
4. Ore: A Starhenge Graphic Novella
Release Date: August 7, 2024
If there are three constants in life, they are death, taxes, and always read books by Liam Sharp.
5. Houses of the Unholy
Release Date: August 14, 2024
Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips release their highly anticipated satanic panic meets true crime novella. Everything they do is fantastic, so this is a must-pick-up.
6. Black Cloak #7
Release Date: August 21, 2024
The fantasy/crime book continues with a new arc from Kelly Thompson and Meredith McClaren. In this issue, a new case begins as our main character is accused of murder.
7. Standstill #1
Release Date: August 21, 2024
What if you could stop time? And what if the device to make that happen fell into the wrong hands? That’s the idea of this wild new book from Lee Loughridge, that should appeal to any fans of ultraviolence in the Garth Ennis mold.
8. Local Man #13
Release Date: August 21, 2024
Local Man versus the Faceless Horde! One of which is his mom! This book is equal parts funny, heartbreaking, and a loving satire of Image Comics past. Meaning: the perfect comic book.
9. Convert #1
Release Date: August 28, 2024
All I know about this book is that it’s a sci-fi series about a soldier who crash lands on a strange planet, written by John Arcudi. But all that sounds great, so let’s go.
10. Saga #68
Release Date: August 28, 2024
You know what Saga is, right? I don’t need to sell that to you? Cool.
11. Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #1
Release Date: August 28, 2024
My personal most anticipated issue of the month, hot off The Silver Coin, Michael Walsh writes and draws the story of how Frankenstein’s monster got his parts, starting with a grieving son and the hands of his dead father.
