It’s time once again for our weekly production update on Marvel Studios projects. And this one is a bit of a no-brainer, given the big announcements coming out of San Diego Comic-Con. They include tidbits about Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret Wars, and Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Before we get into it, though, a word of caution. All of this info is pulled from Production Weekly, a newsletter that culls together info for those looking for work behind the scenes on TV shows and movies. Though the info is often reliable, occasionally it’s pulled from projects that are rumored, or submitted to PW. They are very open about not vetting anything, they’re just there to help get people hired. With that in mind, take anything that hasn’t been announced in the trades with a grain of salt.
Let’s start with Fantastic Four: First Steps, which not only has a new title but also just officially started production in the UK on July 30. That’s the main update there, as the cast and director flew from San Diego to Pinewood Studios in the UK, where they’re currently creating a 1960s version of the iconic characters. The movie, as previously reported, stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Julia Garner, Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, Ralph Ineson, and Natasha Lyonne. It’s written by Jeff Kaplan, Ian Springer, Josh Friedman, and Eric Pearson. It will be in production until December for a planned July 25, 2025 release date. As many folks have pointed out, it’s wild that DC Studios’s Superman wrapped production right as Fantastic Four started production; though both are opening within two weeks of each other. Hollywood!
As for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the biggest update on both beyond the title of the former is a little thing you may have heard about: Robert Downey Jr. has joined the cast of both movies, for a reported $80 million plus payday. In addition, Kevin Feige announced in Hall H that the titular Fantastic Four would appear in both Avengers movies, as well. Otherwise, PW does list Stephen McFeely as the writer for both movies and Joe Russo and Anthony Russo as directors.
Lastly, they still list the same production dates from when these were known as Avengers 5 and Avengers 6. Doomsday is scheduled for production from March 2025 to August 2025, with a release date of May 1, 2026. Meanwhile, Secret Wars they have filming from December 2025 through June 2026, for a May 7, 2027 release date. We’ll see how that all pans out, though the start date for Doomsday squares up with the “early 2025” start date bandied about by the trades.
That’s it for this week’s production update, and I really hope the FF cast is having fun in London because at this point they’re not going to be allowed to leave for the next two years.
