‘Ultimate Universe: One Year In’ Takes Stock Of Marvel’s Blockbuster Reboot

Last year, Marvel introduced their brand new Ultimate Universe. As revealed last night at San Diego Comic-Con, the publisher will be doing a quick loop-back and check-in with the just announced one-shot, Ultimate Universe: One Year In.

One of the initially underplayed aspects of the Ultimate Universe, as set up by architect Jonathan Hickman, is that it takes place in real time. This is apparent in Ultimate Spider-Man, which plainly labels each issue with the month the issue is published in. It’s less apparent in titles like Ultimate Black Panther and Ultimate X-Men. But it’s there, nonetheless.

Meanwhile, the newly launched The Ultimates has come right out and blasted the news, with a countdown clock to what might be the end of the Ultimate Universe… Two years from its launch, The Maker — aka the evil Reed Richards from the original Ultimate Universe — will escape his prison, and aim to retake the world.

The Ultimate Universe: One Year In special will flip the lens from the heroes, to the villains. What has the Maker’s Council be up to while the heroes have been building their strength? The title comes from Ultimates writer Deniz Camp, with a cover by Stefano Caselli and art by one of my favorite young working pencillers, TBA. It’ll hit stores on December 11, 2024, but you can check out the synopsis and cover right now.

It’s been one year since the Maker was locked away and the Ultimate Universe was left in the hands of his villainous council. And in that time, heroes around the world have risen up, determined to fix this broken world. Now, with one year left until their leader’s return, the Maker’s Council launches a bold plan to wipe out these heroes. This oversized one-shot sets the stage for the second year of the Ultimate line and includes the debut of the Ultimate versions of two major Marvel characters!
