SDCC ‘Penguin’ Activation Evacuated Due To Fire

The Penguin

Does someone have the location of Batman villain Firefly? Because the activation for the upcoming Max series The Penguin at San Diego Comic-Con was abruptly evacuated and shut down due to a fire last night (July 26).

News started to leak out around 7:30pm PT, as guests at the activation — a bar meant to mimic the Iceberg Lounge, run by Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Ferrell) in The Batman and the upcoming spinoff series — were hastily evacuated from the location, due to smoke filling the premises.

Located at the Bloom Nightclub at 919 Fourth Ave in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, the lounge was in the middle of a press preview from 6pm to 8pm, when the fire broke out. General admission for the event was planned to start at 8pm, and last until Midnight, but was delayed as the San Diego Police Department cleared the area to allow firefighters to do their work.

Per Variety, the fire began at a Brazilian steakhouse that shares the location, most likely the Rei Do Gado Brazilian Steakhouse located at 939 Fourth Avenue. No injuries were reported as of 8:30pm PT last night, and by that time, the activation was already back up and running.

As of this writing, the Iceberg Lounge should be open again today, Saturday, July 27, from 7pm PT to Midnight. You can reserve tickets here, and here’s Max’s official blurb teasing the event:

To celebrate the highly anticipated upcoming HBO Original series THE PENGUIN, Max will transform the Bloom Nightclub into Gotham’s famed Iceberg Lounge for two evenings of drinks and immersive experiences. Guests will enter through the “Iceberg Descent,” a multi-sensorial dive into Gotham’s Iceberg Lounge lobby and the party within. Inside the main club, fans will enjoy live DJ sets, photo opportunities and gain access to the inner sanctum, 44 Below, diving deeper into the world of THE PENGUIN.

And here’s Variety’s footage of the smoke from the fire:
