They’re going back to Cali! As announced yesterday (July 26) at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel is introducing a brand new West Coast Avengers, from writer Gerry Duggan and Danny Kim. Oh, and Ultron is on the team??
The title was actually teased during Duggan’s run on Invincible Iron Man, in the final pages of issue #20. There, Tony Stark teased that he and his friend Rhodey, aka War Machine, were in California to set up a new iteration of the classic team. And in previous issues, Rhodey had put together an all-villain team to fight X-Men baddies Orchis, which Tony jokingly referred to as the “Work Release Avengers.”
But Ultron? A villain so bad that former Avengers editor Tom Brevoort recently noted that during his tenure, one of his edicts was that if you have Ultron in a story, that story has no other, bigger villain?
Well, Brevoort is gone from the Avengers office, and it looks like it’s fair game on the robot bad guy. Along for the ride are the aforementioned Iron Man and War Machine, Spider-Woman, and Firestar. You can get a first look at the covers to issue #1, as well as the synopsis. The title goes on sale on November 27, 2024.
