You won’t have Zeb Wells to kick around anymore! The co-writer of Deadpool & Wolverine is officially exiting Marvel‘s Amazing Spider-Man with issue #60 of the title, which will hit stores this October.
The news comes via Marvel’s October solicits, aka the info sent to comic book stores three months in advance in order to bank sales of their books. And as usual with Amazing Spider-Man, two issues are coming out in October. Issue #59 featured art by John Romita Jr., and continues Spider-Man’s “mano a mano fight” with Tombstone that began in September’s issue #58.
It all ends in issue #60, though, as Wells wraps up his run that began with the current volume of the series — though he also penned issues during the title’s Brand New Day era. The final issue solicit teases, “Zeb Wells says goodbye to the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN in style with his collaborators JOHN ROMITA JR., ED McGUINNESS and some other special surprise guests.”
However, of note, while Wells is leaving, nothing in the solicitation says John Romita Jr. is leaving the title, too. We do know that Joe Kelly and Justina Ireland will be taking over writing, alongside Ed McGuinness and Gleb Melnikov for a 10-issue arc, starting with issue #61. But it sure seems like Romita Jr. isn’t done with Spider-Man. Perhaps he’ll be coming back to the title after Kelly and Ireland’s “Eight Deaths of Spider-Man” storyline?
And in fact, when Marvel teased the storyline, they noted in a press release provided to Comic Book Club, “And to discover what comes next for John Romita Jr. and Amazing Spider-Man, KEEP READING, TRUE BELIEVER!”
Regardless of what happens with Romita Jr., though, Wells will be on to bigger – and hopefully better things.
