As announced today at San Diego Comic-Con, Oni Press’s rebooted EC Comics line is expanding dramatically. Today saw the release of the horror anthology Epitaphs from the Abyss, and on August 7 we’ll thrill at the sci-fi stories of Cruel Universe. Now you can add to the list a holiday book, Shiver Suspenstories, and a dark fantasy book, Cruel Kingdom. And if that wasn’t enough, Epitaphs is now an ongoing series.
“With EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS #1 now on store shelves, it’s safe to say the full-blooded return of EC Comics to store shelves worldwide has exceeded even our own aggressive expectations to become Oni Press’ biggest Direct Market launch in a decade,” said Hunter Gorinson, Oni Press President & Publisher, via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “We owe a huge debt of thanks to the fans, creators, and retailers who have supported this righteous resurrection for one of the most iconic and influential publishing houses in the history of the comics medium. It also means the second phase of our ambitious plans to strengthen the scope of our EC publishing program can now be revealed – beginning with a surprise expansion for EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS and continuing into two new releases: this winter’s holiday-themed SHIVER SUSPENSTORIES special and EC’s first-ever excursion in dark fantasy, CRUEL KINGDOM, beginning in January!”
The first two titles have sold more than 65,000 copies each, per Oni — and consequently, Epitaphs from the Abyss, which was originally planned for a five-issue run, is now extended into 12, monthly issues. After it wraps up next July, Oni and EC will introduce a new horror title. Upcoming issues of Epitaphs will include stories by Charlie Adlard, Corinna Becko, Matt Bors, Chris Condon, Matt Kindt, Tim Seeley, Jay Stephens, Joanne Starer, Alexandre Tefengki, and more. Lee Bermejo will provide covers for all 12 issues.
