‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Fresh On Rotten Tomatoes, Not So Fresh On Metacritic

Deadpool and Wolverine

The review embargo for Deadpool & Wolverine has broken. And the review aggregators have broken from each other, as Rotten Tomatoes has certified the movie as “Fresh,” while Metacritic? Not so much.

You can read our own Deadpool & Wolverine review for our thoughts on the movie, but suffice it to say that critics are split on the film… At least as of this writing. As for fans? They’ll get to see the movie when it officially opens on Friday, July 26, 2024; though really at 3 pm ET on Thursday, July 25, 2024, when the movie starts playing in theaters here in America.

But if you are curious about the overall critical response to the movie, let’s break it down.

Deadpool & Wolverine Is Certified Fresh On Rotten Tomatoes

Deadpool and Wolverine is Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes

Per an email sent to Comic Book Club by PR reps for Rotten Tomatoes, Deadpool & Wolverine was “Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 79% on the Tomatometer with 116 reviews,” at 7:53 pm ET on July 23. That’s a little under two hours after the review embargo broke, so first of all congratulations to every reviewer who hit their deadline.

As of this writing, the score has ticked up slightly on RT, to 80% with 141 reviews — so that seems to be a positive critical trajectory for the movie. And per the PR email, “Fandango announced that DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE has officially become the best ticket pre-seller of 2024, surpassing DUNE: PART 2.” So seems like a lot of people want to see this one!

However, I will note that as you may or may not be aware, Rotten Tomatoes assigns either “rotten” or “fresh” to a movie on its own, based on their take on a review. If a review seems to be even a tick more positive than negative, it’s fresh. So while a lot of folks look to Rotten Tomatoes for guidance on whether they should see a movie or not, it’s far more useful to head into the reviews themselves to get a sense of what the actual takes on the movie are.

Deadpool & Wolverine Is “Mixed Or Average” On Metacritic

The other major aggregator is Metacritic. And while it doesn’t get as much attention as Rotten Tomatoes, I would argue it’s a better sense of the actual critical response to the movie. That’s because critics submit number scores for their review out of 100 — or have them assigned if they don’t submit one.

So for Deadpool & Wolverine, for example, since that’s, you know, what we’re talking about: as of this writing, it has a 54 score indicating “mixed or average” reviews, based on 45 critic reviews.

The highest score here is an 88 from USA Today, and the lowest is a 20 from both The Irish Times and The Telegraph. Once again, the United States and the UK, coming to blows!

So, your choice… You can take the higher volume of reviews that splits things into a binary, or you can take the lower volume that breaks them down into a more specific score. Alternatively, you can go see the movie this weekend and decide for yourself.
