Late last week, Marvel posted a teaser of a melted Darth Vader helmet to indicate where their line of Star Wars comics would be heading next. And now we know exactly when they’ll be set, with the announcement of Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising.
In fact, this will be the first of three limited series bridging the gap between Return of the Jedi and the sequel trilogy, which kicked off with The Force Awakens. This first series will run four issues, and be written by Alex Segura, with art by Leonard Kirk, Stefano Raffaele, and Jethro Morales.
“It’s an unbelievable honor to be able to tell this lost story of Star Wars history, alongside so many amazing artists, in the pages of the three BATTLE OF JAKKU limited series,” Segura said via press release provided to Comic Book Club. “Our story will be epic in scope – involving all the major characters you love, plus some new, exciting additions to the mythos. We’ll not only give readers a front-row seat to the final battle of the Galactic Civil War – we’ll reframe the aftermath of the Battle of Endor and introduce a new, menacing threat that will keep our heroes guessing. The goal for all of us is to turn up the volume and make sure this adventure stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the other stories of the era. As the Empire collapses, a new darkness arises!”
Picking up after Star Wars #50 and Star Wars: Darth Vader #50 wrap up the post-Empire Strikes Back era in September, this new mini will star Luke, Leia and other heroes to show how they got from the Yub Nub party on Endor, to the wrecked planet Rey finds herself on when we pick up in the sequels.
And yeah, the new trilogy of minis will touch on the Emperor’s “secret contingency plans” as well.
Added Editor Mark Paniccia, “This series is definitely something fans don’t want to miss. Within the chaos and destruction of all three minis there are elements that hint to what comes next.”
