‘King Spawn’ Movie In The Works From Blumhouse

King Spawn

Way back in 1997, Michael Jai White starred as Spawn, the character created by Todd McFarlane, in a live-action movie of the same name. People, to be kind, did not love the film. And so for over 25 years, McFarlane has been promising a better version of Spawn would be coming to theaters. Guess what? Seems like it might be happening, and the name of the movie is King Spawn.

The news comes via the Blumhouse and McFarlane social media accounts, which posted a script cover earlier today. Along with the title King Spawn, the script is by Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman, and Scott Silver, based on characters created by Todd McFarlane.

This is a pretty different thing than what McFarlane planned back in 2015 when he initially announced a new Spawn movie. At the time, he was planning on writing and directing the film himself. McFarlane joined up with Blumhouse in 2017, and then 2018 Jamie Foxx joined the project playing Al Simmons, aka Spawn.

…Then Joker came out, and to paraphrase the character The Joker, it changed everything. The script went back to the drawing board to match up to the billion-dollar-grossing R-rated comic book-based movie. The writing team on the current script was brought on board in 2022, and in 2023 Jason Blum publicly announced the plan was to release a Spawn movie in 2025.

Granted, Spawn has been at the script stage before. And calling it King Spawn is an interesting twist, as that comic — which found the title character paying off on his destiny to become king of Hell — only just came out in 2021.

So will King Spawn actually hit theaters in 2025? Or is this just another in a long line of false starts for McFarlane? We’ll have to stay tuned to find out.
