Marvel has been regularly releasing their enjoyably silly mash-up covers featuring Disney characters masquerading as classic comic book covers. Heck, the initiative has been so popular that it’s being spun out into two actual comics: What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine? and What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor? Great questions all, but the latest batch is the wildest bunch yet because it’s thrust the Disney characters into the Krakoa era.
The new Disney What If? Variant Covers will roll out monthly on alternate issues of Amazing Spider-Man. The first, by Giada Perissinotto, will hit on October 9’s Amazing Spider-Man #59, and riffs on the classic team-up of Captain America, Black Widow, and Wolverine on the cover of Uncanny X-Men #268. The third, on Amazing Spider-Man #62, is by Francesco D’Ippolito and riffs off the “Avengers Disassembled” cover from Avengers #500, and will debut on December 11.
But the stand-out of this trio is the second cover, by Paolo Mottura, for Amazing Spider-Man #61, which will hit on November 13. It riffs off the cover for House of X #1, which kicked off the Krakoan age, and I have so many questions. Is Krakoa for all Mouseketeers? Do they have the rule “make more mice?” Are Goofy, Mickey, and Minnie in some sort of threesome on the moon (canonical)?
They’re just covers, so we’ll never find out. But hey, maybe Marvel can launch a third What If…? one-shot, and finally get that moment we’ve all been waiting for, which is Mickey X saying, “To me, my Toodles.”
