Kevin Feige Teases “The Mutant Era” Is Coming To The MCU

Earlier today, a virtual press conference was held for Deadpool & Wolverine. While news has only started to trickle out, there is one quote that’s getting most of the buzz: Marvel chief Kevin Feige teasing that “the Mutant era” is coming to the MCU.

Feige dropped this little ditty when he was asked about what Deadpool & Wolverine means to the cinematic universe, as a “before and after” type thing. Per The Playlist, he tackled two topics: whether every movie would be rated R past this point, which the answer was “of course not;” and whether introducing the Fox characters and mutants will change the MCU, which the answer was “heck yeah,” basically.

“Also, the ‘after’ is clearly—now that we have characters from the X-Men world, the Mutants—we haven’t had access to before,” Feige said. “So, this is the beginning of that, and every [movie] post Deadpool & Wolverine will be the Mutant era coming into the MCU.”

Now, a little caveat here about how journalism works. When you put a word in brackets like that, it’s usually providing some clarity that was otherwise left out of the sentence, but was in a previous sentence, or you’re adding the last — or first — name of someone who wasn’t mentioned before in the quote. There are other reasons, but I bring this up to say the “[movie]” is doing a lot of work here. I’d be very curious to hear what word Feige actually used, because whatever it is, “movie” potentially implies something different from what he might have said.

This is also not to throw shade at The Playlist… Conferences are fast and furious, and it’s entirely possible that in some way Feige was indeed saying every movie after Deadpool & Wolverine will include mutants in some way. The Marvels had Beast (Kelsey Grammer) in it. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness included Professor X (Patrick Stewart). Deadpool & Wolverine, as you may be aware, includes Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman).

That said, while some fan accounts on social media have run with this quote and started posting things like “The Multiverse Saga is now The Mutant Saga,” Feige said nothing of the sort. He also did not say there will be mutants in every movie, or that it’s all building to the intro of the X-Men. Again, all of that could be true, but in fact what Feige said here was what we’ve known ever since Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) was called a mutant in the finale of Ms. Marvel: Marvel Studios is slowly working the mutants and X-Men characters into their universe.

So yeah, the mutant era is coming. But will the next movie down the pike – Captain America: Brave New World- be mutant-heavy? TBD, I guess. At least we know it won’t be R-rated.
