The Boys Season 4 finale, “Season Four Finale” (previously titled “Assassination Run”) just dropped on Prime Video. And you know what that means: the interminable wait until Season 5 has begun. Don’t worry, the show has already been picked up for a fifth and final season. But the big question is, when will The Boys Season 5 premiere on Prime Video?
To get this out of the way up front, Amazon hasn’t announced a premiere date for The Boys Season 5, because it hasn’t even started filming yet. But! We do have a rough idea of where they are in the writing process, when Season 5 may film, and from there can give an educated guess about The Boys Season 5 premiere date. So let’s get to it, and break down when The Boys might premiere the — sob — final episodes of the series.
When Will The Boys Season 5 Premiere On Prime Video? What We Know About The Final Season Premiere Date:
On May 14, 2024, The Boys was renewed for Season 5. Then on June 11, 2024, in advance of the Season 4 premiere, Amazon announced the fifth season would also be the final season. However, as showrunner Eric Kripke explained to Variety, he got approval to make Season 5 the finale of the series about a year prior, after discussing how he already had the ending of the series planned out with Amazon. And in fact, Kripke has been planning for Season 5 to finish the series since they were working on Season 3.
I mention all this mostly to frame out that there’s a pretty clear plan for how to end the series, and Kripke has been actively working on this in some fashion for a while.
That said? As of June 11, they were writing Season 5, with Kripke adding, “It’s not totally locked in yet but we are going to start shooting around mid-November. And I don’t know when it’ll premiere yet, but we’ll be shooting well into middle of ’25.”
He also clarified that, as with previous seasons, they’re aiming for eight episodes… Unless things change, we’ve got four seasons of production data to draw on to speculate about a potential release date.
Season 1 filmed for four and a half months. Season 2 filmed for about four months. Meanwhile, Season 3 took six and a half months — it filmed through COVID, so presumably that slowed things down. And Season 4 took a whopping seven and a half months to film.
If we assume that the final season takes six-ish months, which is assuming a lot, and they do start in November, they’d likely wrap in May of 2025.
Then, there is post-production to think about. Season 1 premiered about nine and a half months after production wrapped. Season 2 also premiered about nine and a half months after production wrapped. Meanwhile, Season 3 actually released slightly less than nine months after production wrapped. And Season 4 took a bonkers year and two months, almost to the day, to be released.
Let’s assume the latter is atypical… Though that might be a bad idea since they’ll likely put their all into the final season. But for the sake of trying to arrive at some reasonable answer here, nine-ish months after wrapping seems about right for post-production on The Boys.
Given that, if The Boys Season 5 does start filming in mid-November, if it wraps in May of 2025, and if there are about nine months of post-production, then we can expect The Boys Season 5 to premiere around March of 2026. Which sounds kind of nuts, but there’s been a two-year gap between seasons since the end of Season 2.
In fact, I would speculate further that Amazon sees this as a Summer show. With the past two seasons premiering in June, it’s more likely that Season 5 will premiere in June of 2026. That said, who even knows if there will be a Prime Video by that point… The streaming landscape is changing pretty rapidly. We’ll just have to stay alive for the next two years to find out.
When Will Gen V Season 2 Premiere On Prime Video?
To hopefully help ease the wait, there’s also Gen V Season 2 to think about. The first season of that series took over a year after wrapping to hit Prime Video… But it might be a quicker turnaround this time. And despite the unfortunate and sudden passing of actor Chance Perdomo in a motorcycle accident earlier this year, Gen V Season 2 went into production in May.
The first season of that show took four months to film, so presumably this will be done by September or October. At that point, I could see Gen V Season 2 getting a more typical 6-8 months of post-production, which might place Gen V Season 2 as premiering in June of 2025 on Prime Video — a year before The Boys Season 5 (maybe) premieres.
What Else Is Coming In The Boys Universe?
Beyond The Boys and Gen V, there’s the previously announced The Boys: Mexico spinoff which is still being developed. And there are more spinoffs — potentially — to come. So even with the final season, you’ll have plenty of The Boys back in town for a long, long time.
