One of the worst-kept secrets in comics is finally officially out there, as DC Comics has revealed the creative teams working on their new Absolute Universe titles as part of the DC All In initiative.
Yesterday (July 17), the publisher threw a celebratory livestream featuring the two architects of the linked line, Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson. There, the duo revealed it’ll all kick off with the DC All In Special #1 on October 2, with art by Daniel Sampere and Wes Craig — though Snyder revealed today in his newsletter that there will also be “other people to surprise you with.” In the issue, Darkseid attacks the reformed Justice League, leading to the reveal of a new planet “founded on Darkseid energy,” which is darker and harsher than the main DC Universe.
That’s the Absolute Universe, and it will launch in October with three titles: Absolute Batman, Absolute Superman, and Absolute Wonder Woman.
Absolute Batman #1 will be written by Snyder, with art by Nick Dragotta, and focuses on, per AIPT, a “Dark Knight that doesn’t have the money, mansion, or butler of his core-line counterpart.” The first issue will hit stores the week after the All In Special on October 9, 2024.
Two weeks later on October 23, we’ll see the release of Absolute Wonder Woman #1 by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman. Like Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman won’t have a butler. She also will have “no island paradise, no sisterhood to shape her, nor a mission of peace—so what is the purpose of an Amazon warrior in this new universe?”
Also butler-less is Absolute Superman #1, written by Jason Aaron with art by Rafa Sandoval. Like the other two characters, this Kal-El is without his usual trappings: “No family, no Fortress of Solitude, and no home. Will he still stand for truth, justice, and a better tomorrow in this new universe?” This title will hit on November 6, 2024, and Aaron plugged via his newsletter that fans can find out a whole lot more at DC’s Absolute Power panel at San Diego Comic-Con, held Thursday, July 25 from 12:45 pm to 1:45 pm in Room 6DE.
