The popular expression goes write what you know. Well, we may have to extend that to “direct what you know” as a new report indicates Joe and Anthony Russo, aka the Russo Bros, may return to direct the next two Avengers movies for Marvel.
The news comes via THR, who characterizes this as “early talks.” This means that like Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, who was previously reportedly in talks to direct the next Avengers flick, things may fall through.
However, with Marvel Studios’s big return to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con in a week and a half, pure speculation but the production company may want to speed things along for some sort of announcement at the upcoming panel… Not to mention the premiere dates for the movies are relatively rapidly approaching. They are currently scheduled for May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027… Which seems like a ways away, until you consider how long it makes to create movies this size.
While the Russos made a big deal out of exiting Marvel after the success of Avengers: Endgame – they previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War for the studio, their careers haven’t really been on fire since. They did produce Everything Everywhere All At Once, but directorial efforts like Cherry and The Gray Man may have gotten streams, but didn’t make a critical or cultural impact.
Marvel, too, may have Deadpool & Wolverine coming up, but parent company Disney is all in on Avengers movies. Having the Russos come back for the next two films is a safe bet for the directors, and the studio.
